Case Study: Building a Sprung Plywood Floor for a Dance Studio
| by Dave Ashbolt

When it comes to creating the perfect space for movement, precision, and durability, you need more than just expertise – you need heart. That’s exactly what went into building a bespoke sprung dance floor for Aurora Elite Dance Academy, a vibrant dance studio.
This project wasn’t just another job; it was a labour of love for Jonathan, the tradesman behind it – crafted for his sister’s newly expanded gym. Here’s a closer look at how it all came together.
The Project Brief
Aurora Elite Dance Academy was ready to take their performance space to the next level, literally. The studio needed a sprung dance floor, a critical feature for dancers to protect joints, enhance performance, and ensure safety during routines.
The challenge? Delivering a professional-grade floating floor system that was cost-effective, durable, and customised to fit their needs.
The Materials and Process
To achieve the ideal “spring effect”, they used 50 sheets of 12mm softwood shuttering plywood, placed over a foundation of handmade springs. This innovative solution provided the perfect amount of give for the dancers while ensuring the floor remained sturdy and reliable.
While the main structure is complete, the finishing touch; a specially ordered cushioned dance mat from France is set to arrive soon. Once installed, this mat will elevate the floor’s comfort and functionality, completing the transformation into a dream space for the dancers.

Why This Matters
This project wasn’t just about installing a floor; it was about enabling dreams. From budding dancers taking their first steps to seasoned pros refining their craft, this space will play a vital role in nurturing talent and inspiring creativity.
It’s a perfect example of how the right materials and a craftsman’s touch can make a lasting impact.
A Tradesman’s Pride
The tradesman behind the project summed it up best: “A tradesman always appreciates hearing that their work is valued”, and knowing it was for his sister’s dance academy must make it all the more special.
