What Is 12mm Shuttering Plywood?

12mm shuttering plywood is a robust and versatile construction material designed for creating concrete formwork, also known as shuttering. This plywood is made by bonding multiple layers of hardwood or softwood veneers together, arranged in a cross-grain pattern to significantly enhance its strength and dimensional stability.

Its 12mm thickness ensures it can withstand the substantial pressures exerted by wet concrete during pouring and curing, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications in construction.

A key feature of 12mm shuttering plywood is its water resistance. It is usually treated with a water-resistant coating or manufactured using water-resistant adhesives like phenolic resins, enabling it to endure moisture exposure without losing structural integrity. This makes it particularly suitable for the repeated wet and dry cycles typical in concrete formwork.

Beyond its primary use in formwork, 12mm shuttering plywood is also used in various other construction-related applications. It can be employed to build temporary structures such as scaffolding platforms, fencing, and partitions. Additionally, it serves as a sturdy base for flooring or roofing in both temporary and permanent constructions due to its load-bearing capabilities.

12mm Shuttering Ply Uses

  • General structural use and general construction
  • Renovation work
  • Hoarding
  • Shuttering
  • Packaging
  • Structural and non-structural building work
  • Provides a solid wall/ temporary structure while concrete sets
  • Suitable for interior applications

Although this type of plywood is structurally stable, please note there may be surface defects present such as knots, discolouration, or splits. These aesthetic defects have no effect on its structural performance however; the sheets' WBP Grading endows them with good weather-resistant capabilities, ensuring they hold up well no matter the forecast.

12mm Softwood Shuttering Plywood Features & Benefits

  • Comprises as many layers as needed to achieve excellent strength
  • Smooth coating on both sides
  • Strong and durable, yet lightweight and easy to work with
  • Resistant to moisture and rot, making it ideal for use in damp or wet conditions
  • Treated with fire-retardant chemicals, making it more resistant to fire
  • Available in a variety of sizes to suit any need
  • Relatively inexpensive, making it a cost-effective solution for many construction projects
  • Standard Sheet Sizes: 2400mm x 1220mm (8ft x 4ft) x 12mm

12mm Shuttering Plywood C+/C Composition

12mm shuttering plywood is an extremely high-strength board that sees multiple layers of softwood plywood glued together. 12mm softwood plywood is generally constructed of spruce-pine-fir (SPF), redwood, or Douglas fir and pine.

Its many layers endow the sheets with exceptional strength, making them great for load-bearing purposes.

Though this Plywood isn't always the most pleasing to the eye (because of potential knots from the manufacturing process), it is still extremely sturdy and useful for construction projects that don't require an aesthetic finish.

It is most commonly utilised for basic building, roofing, and concrete formwork where its structural value takes precedence over its aesthetic appearance.

When used outside, the panel should be treated with a suitable wood treatment/sealant to ensure that all edges are properly sealed.

C +/ C Plywood Grading & Standards

  • Structural Grade - CE2+
  • Face Veneer Grade - C+
  • Reverse Veneer Grade - C
  • Release of Formaldehyde Standard - E1
  • Glue Line Standard - EN314-2 Class 3
  • Durability Standard - EN 636-2 S
  • Harmonized Standard - EN 13986: 2004
  • Surface Appearance Standard - EN 635-3

What is C +/ C Plywood?

C Grade plywood is best used for construction purposes where high levels of strength are required. The material often features discolouration, splits, defects and open knots.
