What Is 3.6mm Non-Structural Hardwood Plywood?

3.6mm Plywood Hardwood Faced Non-Structural Grade is an engineered wood panel specifically manufactured for applications where aesthetic quality is a primary consideration, setting it apart from standard structural plywood grades.

The board features a high-quality hardwood face veneer, which is smoothly sanded to provide an smooth, level surface ready for a decorative finish. Its visible appeal is central to its intended purpose in non-load-bearing interior applications.

This high-grade plywood is particularly well-suited as a base for flooring or as a decorative surface itself; its plain hardwood face can be painted, stained, or varnished to complement diverse interior design schemes.

Beyond flooring, the inherent durability and versatility of this sheet material lend it to a range of other non-structural building uses. Composed of multiple thin layers of wood veneer bonded together, this panel is frequently selected for internal wall linings, decorative panelling, furniture components, joinery, and areas within roofs or soffits where a high-quality, visually appealing finish is desired.

This plywood complies with the requirements of EN636-2, which denotes its suitability for use in humid conditions (Service Class 2), and EN314-2 Bond Class 2, indicating the durability of its glue bond in such environments. These European standards effectively supersede the older, less precise "WBP" (Weather and Boil Proof) term often used to describe moisture-resistant plywood.

Its designated use is exclusively for non-structural applications where good performance in humid interior conditions is beneficial.

Applications

3.6mm Hardwood Ply provides consistent strength and stability in both interior and exterior applications, although when used in exterior applications it must be sealed correctly with an appropriate preserver and oil-based paint.

We recommend using Non-Structural Hardwood Faced Plywood in the following applications:

  • Furniture
  • Bath panelling
  • Flooring
  • Packing cases
  • Storage boxes
  • Interior vehicle building
  • General joinery

Note that if you are using the sheets for furniture making, plywood absorbs more paint than other wood products.

Benefits

  • Smooth hardwood decorative face.
  • Resists warping and bending.
  • Versatile non-structural panel.
  • Excellent for paint/varnish finish.
  • Lightweight, easy to handle.

3.6mm Non-Structural Hardwood Plywood Manufacturing Process

Hardwood Faced Plywood is an engineered wood that comprises multiple thin timber layers laid at right angles, which are then heat bonded together using a resin adhesive.

In the manufacturing process, each adjacent layer of wood is rotated up to 90 degrees and is laid at right angles in a process known as "cross graining". This prevents warping (when the plywood becomes misshaped and difficult to use).

WBP Plywood 3.6mm

Hardwood plywood is sometimes referred to as "WBP Plywood". "WBP" stands for "Weather and Boil Proof", and refers to the type of glue that is used to bond the layers of wood veneer together. Although many people still refer to this type of plywood as "WBP", this terminology is actually outdated and is not relevant to current statutory building requirements.

This terminology has been superseded by the EN314 and EN636 classifications, which define the bonding quality of the adhesive and the standards to which the plywood will perform.

Our hardwood faced plywoods reach Class 2 of these classifications, which means that they are suitable for use in humid conditions, and can be used outside if properly sealed.

However, if the plywood gets wet for a long duration of time it can lead to warping, so it’s important to ensure that it is suitably protected when used outside.

Q&A

Can I use a staple gun to fix your 3.6mm ply to the battens in my shed?

Yes, you can fix it to shed battens using a staple gun. It's advised you use 14–16mm staples. Staple guns offer a quick installation method with minimal splitting, but with slightly lower holding strength compared to screws or nails.
