Chipboard, also referred to as particle board, is a type of engineered wood that is made by compressing wood chips, sawdust, or shavings together with a synthetic resin. This creates a wood product that is uniform, stable, and free from natural defects. It is commonly used for a variety of purposes, such as furniture and cabinet making, interior wall and ceiling linings, internal fittings, and more.

What Are Chipboard Sheets?

Chipboard, also known as particle board, is a synthetic wood material created from little wood chips that are adhered together using synthetic resin. Its lack of natural imperfections makes it an ideal choice for joinery works, cabinet-making projects and to line walls and ceilings or utilise in internal fittings.

At Materials Market, all chipboard sheets and flooring are responsibly sourced and have been certified by both CE and FSC standards.

For your convenience, we carry a great range of flooring chipboard options including 22mm and 18mm chipboard that comes with the added benefit of moisture resistance and safeguards against external elements.

Tongue and Groove Chipboard Flooring

P5 Moisture Resistant Chipboard Flooring T&G is the perfect solution for protecting tile slate, carpet, and linoleum flooring from humidity. This structural grade flooring board is perfect for use in applications where moisture and high humidity might otherwise pose a problem.

The tongue and groove construction of this type of board provides extraordinary strength when it is interlocked and fixed to floor joists with screws or nails.

Understanding how tongue and groove chipboard flooring sheets are constructed is simple. To visualise, imagine a "tongue" protruding from one side, while the opposite edge contains a “groove” which perfectly fits into the other board's "tongue".

By connecting each board on its respective sides, you get an incredibly sturdy floor surface perfect for loft spaces, kitchens and other flooring applications.

Frequently Asked Chipboard Questions

How Do You Cut Chipboard Cleanly?

When compared to a jigsaw, utilising a circular saw yields far superior results due to the cutting action being in one direction. Additionally, it is much easier and quicker for you to make long straight cuts with or without using a guide when employing this type of saw.

Does Chipboard Absorb Water?

Undoubtedly, the major advantages of chipboard are its affordability and versatility in applications. However, untreated chipboard is notoriously porous which can pose a problem as it easily absorbs water.

However, on top of standard chipboard, we also stock melamine-faced chipboard that is moisture-resistant and won't bend or warp when exposed to humid conditions.

What Colour is Chipboard?

Chipboard is crafted from wholly recycled materials without any added colours, creating a canvas of brown and grey hues with speckles dispersed throughout. This makes each piece distinctively one-of-a-kind in its appearance.
