What Is Double-Sided Tape?

  • Carrier Material: This is the central layer that gives the tape its structure and body. Common carriers include foam, film (like polyester or polypropylene), tissue paper, or cloth.
  • Adhesive System: Adhesive is applied to both sides of the carrier.   • Optimal Temperature: Most tapes have an ideal application temperature range (often room temperature). Avoid applying in very cold or very hot conditions unless the tape is specifically designed for it.
  • Apply Firm, Even Pressure: Once the tape is applied to the first surface, and then when the second surface is brought into contact, apply firm, uniform pressure across the entire bonded area (e.g., with a J-roller or by hand). This ensures the adhesive makes good contact and "wets out" the surfaces.
  • Avoid Touching the Adhesive: Oils and dirt from fingers can compromise the bond.
  • Liner Removal: Peel the release liner away carefully, trying not to stretch or distort the tape.
  • Test in an Inconspicuous Area: If unsure about compatibility or potential surface damage upon removal (for temporary tapes), always test on a small, hidden area first.

What Are Some Factors To Consider When Choosing Tape For A Project? 

When choosing double-sided tape, consider the colour of the tape. While most tapes are clear, some are yellow. This can be particularly useful when working with materials that are difficult to see against a clear background. The yellow colour can make it easier to see where the tape has been applied, ensuring that you don't miss any details.


Most importantly, you'll want to consider a tape's suitability for the surface upon which you will be applying it. A rough surface, for example, may call for one particular tape, while a smooth surface may call for another.
