The amount of sand required really depends on the overall sub-base that will be laid for the patio area. Unless there is already a concrete base down, you should install MOT 1 sub-base first, and then a mortar bed [sand and cement] to lay the porcelain slabs on to. It is recommended that the mortar bed for porcelain slabs be 30 to 40mm deep. For this thickness you will need approximately 4 bulk bags of sharp sand to cover 52 m2. You would also require 28 25kg bags of cement to mix with the sand based on a ratio of 5:1. I hope this assists.

What Is Sharp Sand?
Sharp sand, sometimes referred to as grit sand or coarse sand, is a gritty, free-draining aggregate with angular grains. Unlike softer building sands, sharp sand doesn’t contain fine particles or clay content.
Because sharp sand isn’t clogged with fines or clay, it allows water to pass through it quickly. This makes it highly effective in areas where free-draining materials are needed - such as beneath patios, paving slabs, and artificial grass installations.
Its coarse texture also contributes to excellent compaction and structural strength. Once laid and compacted, the angular grains interlock tightly, creating a stable, load-bearing base. This makes it a dependable choice for applying screeds and preparing sub-bases across groundwork projects.
The 800kg bulk bag format provides a substantial volume of material in a single, heavy-duty package, streamlining transport, handling, and storage.
Please note: As the sand is sourced from seabeds, moisture can affect the mass of each bag. Weight may vary by as much as 5% either way.
Applications
Paving and Patio Bedding
- Used as a laying course beneath block paving, flags, and slabs.
- Provides a stable, free-draining bed that helps prevent shifting and water pooling.
Screeding
- Mixed with cement to form floor screeds for internal or external use.
- Ideal for levelling sub-floors before final floor finishes are applied.
Concrete Production
- Combined with cement and coarse aggregates to produce general-purpose concrete.
- Suitable for foundations, kerbs, fence posts, and paving slabs.
Render Base Coat (Traditional Scratch Coat)
- Occasionally used in traditional sand and cement render base coats (not the finish coat).
- Its rough texture provides good key for top coats or finishes.
Drainage and Soakaways
- Excellent for backfilling around drainage pipes or creating soakaways.
- Allows water to filter through without clogging, reducing surface water build-up.
Top Dressing Lawns
- Mixed with compost or soil to improve aeration and drainage in lawn maintenance.
- Helps reduce compaction in heavy or clay soils.
Laying Artificial Grass
- Forms a free-draining sub-base or blinding layer beneath artificial turf.
- Supports a level surface and reduces water retention.
Levelling Ground for Turf
- Used as part of a soil/sand mix to level ground prior to turfing.
- Aids drainage and root development.
Benefits
- Compaction and Stability: Angular grains provide excellent compaction, which creates a stable and durable surface. This is particularly useful for creating strong foundations and bedding for paving or concrete.
- Enhanced Drainage: Highly permeable, which allows water to flow through it easily. This makes it ideal for use in landscaping, French drains, and improving soil drainage in garden beds.
- Versatility: Can be used in a variety of applications, including building, paving, concrete production, drainage systems, landscaping, and artificial turf installation.
- Strength and Durability: When mixed with cement, sharp sand adds strength and durability to mortar and concrete, ensuring a solid, long-lasting result in construction projects such as bricklaying and blockwork.
- Cost-Effective: Generally more affordable when purchased in bulk (such as in 800kg bags), making it an economical choice for both small and large-scale construction or landscaping projects.
- Improved Soil Structure: Adding to heavy clay soils enhances aeration and drainage, improving the soil’s structure and helping plants thrive in garden beds or lawns.
- Prevents Cracking in Floors and Surfaces: When used in screeding applications or as a base under flooring materials like tiles, it helps prevent cracking by providing a solid and stable foundation.
- Long Shelf Life: Being a dry, inert material, sharp sand has a long shelf life and can be stored for extended periods without degradation, making it a reliable material that can be kept on hand for future projects.
- High Load-Bearing Capacity: Ideal for construction projects where weight distribution and structural integrity are crucial.
- Mixing with Other Materials: Blends easily with cement, concrete, or other aggregates.
- Reduces the Risk of Waterlogging: Allows water to flow freely through soil or drainage systems, reducing the risk of standing water and soil erosion.
