What Is Blue Circle General Purpose Cement?
Blue Circle General Purpose Cement is a CEM II/A-L 32,5R cement, containing 6-20% finely ground limestone to improve workability. It develops early strength quickly, reaching 32.5 MPa (megapascals) after 28 days, making it suitable for bricklaying, rendering, floor screeds, concrete repairs, and general construction.
The smooth, cohesive mix works well with plasticisers, air-entraining agents, and other admixtures to enhance performance. Certified to BS EN 197-1 standards, it provides a reliable and durable solution for trade and DIY projects, with a three-month shelf life when stored correctly.
Applications
- Bricklaying and blockwork
- Floor screeds and concrete repairs
- Rendering and plastering
- Mortar and general construction work
Benefits
- Produced using sustainable cement technology and formulations.
- Shelf-life of up to three months allowing re-use in multiple jobs.
- Trial mixes are recommended to determine the optimum mix proportions.
- Exceptional performance - for both small DIY jobs and large-scale applications.
- Compatible with additives such as air entraining agents and pigments - among other admixtures.
- Consistent strength meeting all the conformity criteria in BS EN 197-1 - third party certification which carries a CE mark.
Understanding CEM II/A-L 32,5R
CEM II/A-L 32,5R is a classification under the BS EN 197-1 standard for cement types. Each part of this designation provides specific information about the cement's composition, strength, and properties:
- CEM II - This indicates it is a blended cement, meaning it contains Portland cement clinker combined with other materials, such as limestone, to improve sustainability and workability. It differs from CEM I, which is pure Portland cement.
- A - This refers to the percentage of secondary materials in the mix. Category A means the cement contains between 6% and 20% of the additional material (in this case, limestone).
- L - This specifies that the additional material used in the blend is limestone.
- 32,5 - This represents the strength class, meaning the cement achieves a minimum compressive strength of 32.5 MPa (megapascals) after 28 days of curing.
- R - This stands for "Rapid" early strength development, meaning the cement reaches its initial strength faster than a standard 32,5N (normal strength) cement.
