How delivery works
We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.
Delivery areas
Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.
If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.
What to expect on delivery day
- Deliveries are typically kerbside.
- Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
- Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.
Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery
Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.
Returns
Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.

Product Overview
All-In Ballast is a pre-mixed, construction-grade aggregate consisting of high-quality sharp sand and 10-20mm gravel, supplied in a convenient 800kg bulk bag. This ready-to-use blend is engineered to simplify concrete production by eliminating the need to source and measure separate components, ensuring consistent and reliable mix ratios for every project.
When mixed accurately with cement and water, it provides a robust concrete that compacts effectively, sets with high structural strength, and withstands the physical demands of foundational and general building work. This material is a staple for both professional contractors and DIYers, offering a dependable base for foundations, driveways, paths, and various site-based masonry requirements.
Features & Benefits
- Pre-mixed sharp sand and gravel: Saves time and labour costs by providing the correct ratio of fines to coarse aggregate for standard concrete production.
- Balanced mix composition: Ensures consistent concrete quality with reliable compressive strength and improved workability during the pour.
- Naturally sourced aggregate: Washed and screened to remove organic matter, providing a clean material that bonds effectively with cement.
- Versatile construction use: Suitable for a wide range of structural tasks including foundations, driveways, pathways, bedding, and haunching.
- Dense compaction: The combination of graded stone and sharp sand allows for the removal of air voids, creating a solid mass resistant to heavy loads.
- 800kg bulk bag supply: Facilitates efficient site management and reduces material wastage compared to multiple small bags, specifically for the 800kg bulk bag.
- HIAB crane offloading: Delivered via a vehicle equipped with a heavy-duty crane arm to allow for precise kerbside placement. Ensure the delivery site has sufficient access for a large HGV and is clear of overhead obstructions for crane operation.
Applications
- Concrete production: Combines with cement and water to produce high-strength, durable concrete for building foundations and footings.
- Paving and driveways: Used as the essential aggregate sub-base or concrete base beneath paving, not as the decorative topping itself.
- Securing fence posts: Provides the necessary weight and structural grip when mixed with cement to keep timber or concrete posts rock-solid.
- Path edging: Serves as the haunching material poured behind or at the base of kerb stones and path edging to prevent lateral movement.
- Shed bases: Provides a stable, well-compacted layer for garden sheds when topped with concrete.
- Lightweight path bases: Suitable for garden paths subject to foot traffic, provided the subgrade is already stable.
- Void and foundation filling: Acts as an effective bulk-fill material for deep trenches or voids where ease of compaction is required and water pooling is not a concern.
- DIY repairs: Excellent for patching damaged concrete, including filling cracks in driveways, holes in garage floors, or fixing broken steps.
- Concrete oversites: Used to create the initial level floor layer within a building perimeter before the application of floor screed.
Installation Guidance
- Mix accurately with cement: Use a standard ratio, such as 6 parts ballast to 1 part cement, and add water gradually until a workable, uniform consistency is achieved.
- Prepare the subgrade: Remove all organic material and soft soil, ensuring the ground is firm and level before laying the ballast or concrete mix.
- Compact effectively: Use a mechanical plate compactor or hand rammer on the ballast sub-base to provide a stable, non-yielding surface.
- Monitor water addition: Avoid over-watering the mix, as excess water significantly reduces the final compressive strength and increases the risk of cracking.
- Seal for curing: Once poured, keep the concrete damp or covered with polythene for several days to allow for a slow, strong hydration process.
- Handle bulk safely: Utilise mechanical lifting equipment for the 800kg bulk bag to manage transport and minimise manual handling risks on site.
Compliance & Performance
- Aggregate composition: A balanced blend of sand and stone, washed and screened to provide consistent structural integrity.
- Service class: Suitable for structural foundations, heavy-duty paving bases, and general groundwork.
- Buyer's note on sub-bases: Ballast is suitable for sub-bases in low-load applications (e.g., sheds or light garden paths). For high-load areas or heavy vehicle traffic, a certified sub-base material like MOT Type 1 is recommended.
- Buyer's note on drainage: Not for drainage. Unlike clean shingle or gravel, All-In Ballast contains fine particles (sharp sand) which impede water flow. Do not use in French drains, soakaways, or areas requiring active drainage; select clean, single-sized gravel for those applications.
- Important note: Bulk bag weight may differ by ±5% due to variations in moisture content. Colour and texture vary naturally by source. This is a construction-grade material and is not suitable for decorative purposes.ons.
