Are Kingspan Insulation Boards Fireproof?

Euroclass ratings will tell you how flammable the board is. The scale covers a wide range of options, from A1 (non-combustible) all the way to F (combustible).The Kingspan Kooltherm range is made from phenolic insulation which benefits thermal conductivity. When phenolic insulation is exposed to heat, a process called pyrolysis (thermal decomposition) begins. A black mark appears on the part of the board that is exposed to heat and hot combustible gases become airborne. Despite this, some of the Kingspan Kooltherm boards can achieve a Euroclass rating of B, which is the best performance that a combustible material can achieve.The Kingspan Therma range is made from PIR insulation. Like boards in the Kooltherm range, some Kingspan Therma boards offer better fire-resistant qualities than others. Kingspan cavity wall insulation, floor insulation, and loft insulation all have different properties. Kingspan notes that all its Therma boards have ‘properties which can limit their contribution to fire development’ and that ‘the products will self-extinguish when the flame source is removed.’A poor Euroclass rating should not deter you. You should focus on the overall value of the build-up of materials that you use. You can install other materials alongside Kingspan insulation boards to improve the overall fire rating.

Are Kingspan Insulation Boards Waterproof?

Phenolic Kingspan insulation boards only absorb around 2% of moisture. They are designed for both residential and commercial use. When you choose boards from the Kooltherm range, you can expect excellent thermal protection and water resistance.Like Kingspan phenolic boards, Kingspan PIR Therma panels have a closed-cell structure and are resistant to moisture.

Can You Paint Kingspan Insulation Boards?

There are lots of benefits to choosing rigid boards instead of rolls or batts. One of them is that you can apply paint directly to the board.You can only paint foil-faced insulation if you prepare the board, however. Foil facings are nonporous, which means that they will not hold the paint. If you pre-treat the facing with galvanised metal etching primer, you can expect a better result. Always consult with a professional before painting a rigid insulation board. The painting process might involve dangerous chemicals that are better left to the professionals.
