Kingspan K106
(2 Products)K106 is a premium cavity-wall insulation board that sits between a wall’s inner and outer masonry leaves.
Designed for full-fill applications, it occupies the entire cavity yet still preserves a vital 10mm residual air gap for moisture control. The payoff is a warmer, more energy-efficient home and long-term defence against heat loss and damp.
What Is Kingspan Kooltherm K106?
Kingspan Kooltherm K106 is a rigid phenolic insulation board designed for use in full-fill cavity wall applications. It offers a low thermal conductivity of 0.019 W/m·K, making it suitable for achieving high levels of thermal performance with relatively thin wall build-ups.
The board fills the cavity between masonry leaves while maintaining a 10mm residual air gap, helping to manage moisture and comply with building guidance.
One side is faced with low-emissivity foil to reflect heat inward, and the other with a polypropylene fleece to block external moisture while allowing vapour to escape.
Composition
- Core: High-performance phenolic foam insulation - rigid, fibre-free, and thermally efficient.
- Inner (Warm Side): A low-emissivity foil facing that reflects radiant heat back into the home.
- Outer (Cold Side): A water-resistant but vapour-permeable polypropylene fleece that protects against external moisture while allowing walls to breathe.
Benefits
- Thermal Performance: With an ultra-low thermal conductivity of just 0.019 W/m·K, this means better insulation performance with less space used.
- Full Fill with Moisture Control: Designed to completely fill the cavity, reducing heat loss through gaps - while still allowing a 10mm air gap to manage moisture and condensation safely.
- Vapour-Open, Weather-Tight Facing: Outer face features a tough polypropylene fleece that keeps rainwater out while letting internal moisture vapour escape, helping prevent damp and mould inside the wall structure.
- Long-Term Reliability: Kooltherm’s rigid phenolic core is unaffected by air movement, so it maintains consistent performance over time. The board is also resistant to sagging, warping, and degradation.
- Quick Installation: Lightweight, easy to handle, and compatible with standard cavity wall construction methods, K106 makes on-site installation faster and more efficient.
Key Features
- Thermal conductivity: 0.019 W/m·K.
- Compressive strength: >100 kPa.
- Designed to last the lifetime of the wall when installed correctly.
- Resistant to mould, bacteria and most common chemicals (avoid MEK-based products - materials or substances that contain methyl ethyl ketone, a powerful solvent commonly used in industrial cleaners, adhesives, paint removers, and coatings.).
- Euroclass F when tested alone - must be used in a wall build-up that meets fire regulations for the project.
Certifications
- ISO 9001 (Quality)
- ISO 14001 (Environment)
- ISO 45001 (Health & Safety)
- ISO 50001 (Energy)
- BBA Cert. 16/5299 - 90mm & 115mm thicknesses
Fire Performance: K106 is combustible in isolation (Euroclass F). Always confirm the complete wall system - brick outer leaf and plasterboard lining - meets relevant height-based regulations. Consult Kingspan’s fire-reg guidance or your project fire engineer for sign-off.
Installation Essentials
- Orientation: fleece faces outer leaf, foil faces inner leaf.
- Maintain a clear 10mm residual cavity (walls to 25m).
- Use stainless steel Type B/Type 2 wall ties (approx. 4.4 ties/m² up to 12 m height).
- Butt edges lightly; tape vertical joints with 50mm airtight tape to limit air leakage.
- Start 150mm below finished floor level (225mm in ROI) to reduce slab-edge cold bridging.
- Note: The deeper 225mm depth in the Republic of Ireland provides additional protection against wind-driven rain and ground moisture, as required by local building regulations.
- Keep the cavity clear of mortar snots (excess blobs) and debris as you build.
Handling & Storage
Store boards flat, off the ground and under cover, but allow ventilation.
- Protect edges from impact; phenolic foam can crush on sharp corners.
- Cut with a fine-tooth handsaw or score-and-snap knife; control dust with vacuum extraction.
- Wipe off any mineral-oil spills immediately; discard boards exposed to harsh solvents or acids.
Frequently Asked Kingspan K106 Questions
Can Kingspan Kooltherm K106 Prevent Dampness Or Interstitial Condensation Within Cavity Walls?
Yes, Kingspan Kooltherm K106 is designed to manage moisture effectively within cavity walls. Its water-tight outer facing resists moisture penetration from the external leaf, while being vapour-open allows any moisture vapour already present in the cavity to escape.
When installed correctly with appropriate detailing and a continuous 10mm residual cavity, it helps to prevent rain penetration from reaching the inner leaf and reduces the risk of interstitial condensation by ensuring the cavity remains ventilated and dry.
Does K106 Require Any Specific Ongoing Maintenance Once Installed In A Wall Cavity?
No, once Kingspan Kooltherm K106 is correctly installed within a sealed cavity wall, it requires no specific ongoing maintenance.
The rigid phenolic insulation core and durable facings are designed to provide long-term, consistent thermal performance for the lifetime of the building without degradation, assuming the surrounding wall structure remains sound.
Its resistance to mould, microbial growth, and pests further ensures a maintenance-free performance within the cavity.
Does K106 Offer Any Benefits For Reducing Noise Transmission Through Cavity Walls?
While Kooltherm K106's primary function is thermal insulation, its dense, rigid phenolic foam core can offer a marginal contribution to reducing airborne noise transmission through cavity walls.
However, it is not specifically designed or marketed as an acoustic insulation product. For significant improvements in sound insulation, additional measures such as incorporating specific acoustic plasterboard (Type D), using a wider cavity, or installing dedicated acoustic mineral wool within the cavity would be recommended in conjunction with or instead of thermal insulation.
