Product Overview
MOT type 1 sub base supplied in a loose load format. This material is a crushed granular aggregate composed of limestone, granite, or recycled concrete, graded to comply with the Department of Transport Specification for Highway Works (Clause 803).
It provides a stable and well-compacted foundation layer for driveways, access roads, paths, and construction platforms. The material forms a dense load-bearing layer when compacted, supporting overlying tarmac, concrete, or paving.
Supplied as a bulk loose load, it allows direct tipping for large-scale groundwork or surfacing projects where efficiency and volume delivery are essential.
Features & Benefits
- High Load Capacity: Forms a durable and stable base layer capable of supporting heavy vehicular or structural loads.
- Uniform Compaction: Graded composition ensures excellent interlock and compaction for long-term structural integrity.
- Specification Compliant: Manufactured and graded to Clause 803 of the Specification for Highway Works.
- Bulk loose format: Delivered without packaging to allow for direct tipping and immediate use on large-scale groundwork areas.
- Tipping vehicle delivery: Supplied on a specialised lorry designed to offload the material by tipping directly onto the ground.
Applications
- Driveway and Road Foundations: Provides a compacted sub-base suitable for tarmac, block paving, or concrete surfacing.
- Car Parks and Access Routes: Forms a stable structural layer for heavy-use vehicular areas.
- Construction Platforms: Offers a level and load-bearing base for plant and machinery.
- Hard Landscaping Works: Used beneath patios, pathways, and garden structures.
- Large-Scale Groundworks: Suited to developments where bulk quantities are required for uniform surface preparation.
Installation Guidance
- Ground Preparation: Excavate and level the subgrade before laying the material.
- Layer Thickness: Spread in uniform layers, typically 100–150 mm thick, depending on design requirements.
- Compaction: Compact each layer thoroughly using a roller or vibrating plate until maximum density is achieved.
- Moisture Control: Lightly dampen material if required to aid compaction and reduce dust.
- Final Surface Check: Ensure even surface levels and firm compaction before applying surfacing materials.
Compliance & Performance
- Specification Standard: Conforms to the Department of Transport Specification for Highway Works, Clause 803.
- Material Composition: Blend of crushed rock or concrete aggregate typically ranging from 40mm down to dust.
- Load-Bearing Performance: Designed for use beneath highways, driveways, and heavy-duty paved surfaces.
- Delivery method: Supplied loose via a tipping lorry and discharged directly onto a clear, hard-standing area.
- Non-returnable status: This product cannot be returned or refunded once it has been offloaded from the delivery vehicle.
- Important note: Ensure the tipping area is clear of overhead cables and has sufficient space for a large HGV to manoeuvre safely.

How delivery works
We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.
Delivery areas
Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.
If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.
What to expect on delivery day
- Deliveries are typically kerbside.
- Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
- Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.
Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery
Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.
Returns
Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.
