Product Overview

20mm non-decorative pea shingle supplied in a loose load format. This material consists of naturally rounded gravel particles screened to a consistent 20mm grading, typically sourced from riverbeds or quarried deposits. It offers excellent drainage capacity, coarse texture, and stable performance for construction, landscaping, and utility applications.

The shingle provides a clean, free-draining surface for bedding, soakaways, and sub-surface layers where enhanced permeability and large particle size are preferred.

Supplied in bulk loose load format, it enables direct on-site tipping for efficient handling, large-scale coverage, and reduced packaging waste.

Features & Benefits

  • Enhanced Drainage: Large 20mm particle size allows superior water flow and permeability in high-capacity drainage systems.
  • Versatile Use: Suitable for soakaways, sub-base drainage, pipe bedding, and general landscaping applications.
  • Low Maintenance Finish: Naturally self-cleaning material that resists compaction and maintains high permeability over time.
  • Economical Supply: Bulk delivery reduces handling time and packaging waste for major groundwork or landscaping works.
  • Bulk loose format: Delivered without packaging to allow for direct tipping and immediate use on large-scale groundwork areas.
  • Tipping vehicle delivery: Supplied on a specialised lorry designed to offload the material by tipping directly onto the ground.

Applications

  • Drainage Works: Used as a permeable fill for soakaways, French drains, and filter trenches where high flow capacity is needed.
  • Pipe Bedding: Provides cushioning and drainage support for larger diameter underground pipe installations.
  • Landscaping and Ground Cover: Suitable for paths, borders, and non-decorative surfacing requiring natural appearance and stability.
  • Sub-base Drainage Layer: Forms a free-draining layer beneath hard standings and large paved areas.
  • Infrastructure and Commercial Fill: Used as a large-volume, free-draining backfill for civil, utility, or foundation applications.

Installation Guidance

  • Site Preparation: Clear and level the target area before spreading the shingle.
  • Placement: Tip directly from the vehicle or transfer using mechanical equipment for even coverage.
  • Layer Control: Spread in layers appropriate to drainage or bedding requirements, ensuring uniform thickness.
  • Compaction: Lightly compact only where required to stabilise surface without restricting drainage.
  • Inspection: Check that material remains clean and evenly distributed before overlying construction or landscaping layers.

Compliance & Performance

  • Material Specification: Naturally rounded gravel screened to 20mm size grading.
  • Performance Standard: Meets general requirements for drainage and bedding aggregates under BS EN 13242.
  • Physical Properties: Non-decorative, non-reactive, and free from organic impurities for consistent long-term use.
  • Non-returnable status: This product cannot be returned or refunded once it has been offloaded from the delivery vehicle.
  • Important note: Ensure the tipping area is clear of overhead cables and has sufficient space for a large HGV to manoeuvre safely.

How delivery works

We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.

Delivery areas

Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.

If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.

What to expect on delivery day

  • Deliveries are typically kerbside.
  • Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
  • Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.

Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery

Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.

Returns

Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.
