What Is 12mm Moisture Resistant MDF?

Nowadays, installing moisture-resistant materials in high-humidity environments is an industry-standard. Whilst standard MDF is adversely affected by moisture, becoming swollen and distorted with intermittent exposure to water, Moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF) is specifically engineered to withstand high moisture levels and humidity.

Thanks to the moisture-repellent resin used in 12mm moisture resistant MDF's manufacturing process, they are perfectly suited for interior applications where high humidity and high moisture are a risk, proving resilient in areas such as bathrooms or kitchen furniture. These high-performance sheets can be easily identified by their hard-to-miss green face.

What's more, 12mm moisture resistant mdf sheets can also be cut to shape with both hand and machine tools to bring out the best of their wonderfully smooth surface finish.

12mm Moisture Resistant MDF Applications

Moisture-resistant MDF (Medium Density Fibre) board is an incredibly versatile panel, as proven by its popularity in the joinery industry. The sheets are suitable for use in areas where moisture can fluctuate such as bathrooms, boiler rooms, utility rooms and kitchens.

This being said, it should be noted that the sheets aren't waterproof, meaning they are still prone to swelling if in direct contact with the elements. For this reason, we recommend using them solely in internal applications.

A commonly used particle board in the construction and furniture industries, the 12mm Moisture Resistant MDF also has the added advantage of providing a clean and smooth finish which also makes it a popular panel product for wall panelling and decorative projects.

12mm Moisture Resistant MDF sheet material is suitable for the following applications:

  • Furniture
  • Bathroom and kitchen furniture
  • Flooring
  • Doors and Windows Frames
  • Shelving
  • Cabinets
  • Wall panelling
  • Laundry rooms

12mm Moisture Resistant MDF Benefits

One of the many benefits of MR MDF is that it has a slower swelling rate than that of standard MDF, making it a more reliable material candidate for humid conditions.

Let's check the specs:

  • Ideal in applications where occasional wetting and humidity is a problem
  • Suitable for a wide range of machining and surface finishes
  • High internal bond strength
  • Easily shaped with woodworking machines and hand tools
  • Easy to handle
  • Interior use only
  • The panel conforms to the latest European low emission standards ‘E1'
  • Sands down for a uniform finish (preventing harmful fibres from being released)

Do You Need To Prime 12mm Moisture Resistant MDF?

When it comes to painting MDF, be it moisture resistant or standard, it will need to be primed before application. The primer acts as a sealant, in this case, ensuring that the topcoat of paint does not bleed into the MDF.

How is 12mm Moisture Resistant MDF Made?

The manufacturing process for 12mm Moisture Resistant MDF (short for Medium Density Fibreboard) sees wood fibres (wood chippings, recycled offcuts and sawdust) combined with resins and waxes cooked to a high temperature and pressed under high pressure to form sturdy uniform panels.

12mm MR MDF owes its moisture resistance to the moisture-repellent resin used to bond the wood fibres together.

The manufacturing process eliminates knots, air pockets, and grain issues from the MDF boards, ensuring a uniform, defect-free precision finish.
