Looking for durability and versatility on a budget? Look no further than MDF Board. This defect-free composite board can be utilised in various applications, thanks to the fact that it is easily cut, screwed and glued.

The sheets boast a smooth sanded surface which readily accepts paint and staining, making it the perfect material candidate for internal applications with an aesthetic consideration, such as shelving and furniture making.

The manufacturing process for MDF (short for Medium Density Fibreboard) sees wood fibres (recycled offcuts, sawdust and wood chippings) combined with resins and waxes, which are then compressed to form a single sheet with a consistent thickness.

All of our MDF boards are FSC/PEFC chain of custody certified.

12mm Medium Density Fibreboard Standard Applications

MDF Board can be used for everything from furniture to flooring, with its primary use lying in internal uses such as carpentry and furniture building.

Standard MDF is purposed for interior use only due to its inability to handle direct contact with moisture. However, we do sell a moisture-resistant MDF that is designed to hold up in areas of high humidity such as the bathroom or kitchen, should you need something geared towards exterior applications.

In short, standard MDF is an ideal sheet material for non-structural internal use in the majority of domestic and internal applications.

Let's check its most common applications:

  • Furniture
  • Flooring
  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Frames
  • Shelving
  • Cabinet making
  • Shop fittings
  • Internal joinery projects
  • Architectural mouldings
  • Wall panelling

12mm MDF Board Standard Specifications

The many benefits medium density fibreboard offers are vast and plenty. Let's take a look at MDF sheets' specs:

  • The sheets accept both screws and glue
  • Completely free of natural defects such as knots, it can be cut in any direction without compromising structural integrity
  • Smooth sanded finish allows it to be both painted and veneered
  • Cost-effective alternative to plywood and similar counterparts
  • Ideal for paint finishing and internal joinery projects
  • Features a dense fibre body
  • Won't splinter or tear out when cutting
  • Excellent machining qualities

12mm MDF Board Finishing

There are a few options when it comes to finishes for your MDF board:

  • You could go with a clear finish, like lacquer or varnish - this will protect the MDF and give it a nice shine.
  • You could also go with a stain or paint - stain will give the MDF a nice colour, while paint will provide a more solid block colour.
  • If you want to get really fancy, you could even go with a veneer finish - this is a thin layer of wood that is applied to the MDF.  Veneer can be stained or painted, and it gives the MDF a nice, natural look.

The best way to paint MDF is to first coat it in a solvent-based primer of your choice, as this will help the paint adhere to the surface. Once this is done, you can then add the paint - easy.

Whichever finish you choose, make sure to apply it evenly and in thin coats. Now that you know what finishes can be used on MDF, get out there and start building!

MDF Board Cutting

One thing that's important to note when cutting MDF, is that MDF dust can be harmful if inhaled.

When cutting MDF with electric saws we recommend you have the safety hazards covered before cracking on; such as using dust extractors and donning the appropriate safety gear such as dust masks, and respiratory and eye protection.

No matter the tool, instil additional safety measures such as avoiding cutting in confined spaces and ensuring you're always working in a well-ventilated area.
