Product Description
We guess you could say MDF Board is a chip off the old... tree. MDF, Medium Density Fibreboard, is manufactured by combining wood chippings (and wood fibres such as recycled offcuts and sawdust) with resins and waxes and compressing them to form a single sheet with a consistent thickness.
This defect-free composite board is relied upon in a variety of applications within the construction industry. MDF Board is also very affordable, making it a great option for those on a budget.
What's more, MDF can be easily cut, screwed and glued, making it easy to handle and install. It has a smooth surface which is easy to decorate or veneer, making it perfect for internal applications with an aesthetic consideration, such as shelving. All of our MDF boards are FSC/PEFC chain of custody certified.
9mm Medium Density Fibreboard Standard Applications
MDF Board is highly versatile and can be used for everything from furniture to flooring. Despite its versatility, MDF's primary use lies in both carpentry and furniture building; just ask IKEA (big fans).
Standard MDF is purposed for interior use only; any exposure to moisture and wet conditions will cause the board to swell. Although Standard MDF is not generally waterproof, we sell a moisture-resistant MDF that is designed to hold up in areas of high humidity such as the bathroom or kitchen.
In short, MDF is an ideal sheet material for non-structural internal use in the majority of domestic and internal applications.
Let's check its most common applications:
- Furniture
- Flooring
- Doors
- Windows
- Frames
- Shelving
- Cabinet making
- Shop fittings
- Internal joinery projects
- Architectural mouldings
- Wall panelling
9mm MDF Board Standard Specifications
The many benefits medium density fibreboard offer up are vast and plenty. Let's take a look at MDF sheets' specs:
- The sheets accept both screws and glue
- Thanks to its precision finish which eradicates natural defects such as knots, it can be cut in any direction without compromising structural integrity
- Smooth sanded surface allows it to be both painted and veneered
- Cheaper alternative to plywood and similar counterparts
- Won't splinter or tear out when cutting
- Features a dense fibre body
9mm MDF Board Finishing
MDF sheet boasts a smooth sanded surface perfect for subsequent decoration.
The best way to paint MDF is to first coat it in a solvent-based primer of your choice, as this will help the paint adhere to the surface. Once this is done, you can then add the paint - easy.
Other finishes that can be used to decorate MDF are stain or wax, should you want to mix it up a bit.
MDF Board Cutting
One thing that's important to note when cutting MDF, is that MDF dust can be harmful if inhaled.
When cutting MDF with electric saws we recommend you have the safety hazards covered before cracking on; such as using dust extractors and donning the appropriate safety gear such as dust masks, respiratory and eye protection.
No matter the tool, avoid cutting in confined spaces and ensure you're always working in a well-ventilated area.
