Product Overview

Moisture resistant MDF board, measuring 18mm thick and sized 2440mm x 1220mm (8' x 4'). This high-density engineered panel is designed for interior environments exposed to humidity, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

Manufactured with moisture-repellent resins, the board provides improved performance compared with standard MDF, resisting swelling and distortion in humid conditions. Its uniform composition ensures clean machining, making it suitable for CNC routing and bespoke joinery.

The smooth surfaces accept paint, laminate, or veneer for decorative finishes.

Features & Benefits

  • Moisture resistant: Enhanced with resins to withstand humid indoor conditions.
  • Smooth finish: Sanded surfaces ready for paint, veneer, or laminate.
  • Reliable machining: Consistent fibre structure cuts cleanly with hand tools or CNC.
  • Stable construction: Resists warping and swelling in humid areas.
  • Cost-efficient: Affordable option for humidity-prone interior projects.
  • Large sheet size: 2440mm x 1220mm format for broad coverage.
  • Nominal thickness 18mm: Robust format ideal for furniture and shelving.

Applications

  • Kitchen and utility cabinetry: High-density 18mm core provides the necessary structural integrity for carcasses, doors, and shelving in areas prone to ambient steam.
  • Bathroom furniture and vanities: Moisture-resistant resins prevent dimensional instability and surface warping in high-humidity environments when correctly primed and finished.
  • Skirting boards and architraves: Precision-machined 18mm profile allows for clean routing of decorative patterns that remain stable in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Interior wall panelling: Impact-resistant substrate provides a smooth, paintable surface for decorative wainscoting and wall cladding in high-traffic residential areas.
  • Boiler housings and boxing-in: Enhanced moisture resistance makes this board suitable for concealing pipework and boilers where temperature fluctuations and condensation occur.
  • Bespoke furniture making: Homogeneous core construction allows for intricate machining and edge-profiling for high-quality internal joinery and storage solutions.

Installation Guidance

  • Preparation: Store flat in dry conditions; acclimatise before use.
  • Cutting: Use sharp saw blades or CNC machines for precise edges.
  • Fixing: Secure with appropriate screws, glue, or nails.
  • Finishing: Apply primer before painting or decorative finishing.
  • Environment: Suitable for humid, but not wet, interior conditions.

Compliance & Performance

  • Material specification: Moisture resistant medium density fibreboard (MDF).
  • Surface finish: Smooth, sanded both faces.
  • Compliance: Conforms to BS EN622-5 for humid conditions; E1 formaldehyde rating.
  • Important note: Not waterproof; avoid prolonged water exposure.

How delivery works

We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.

Delivery areas

Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.

If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.

What to expect on delivery day

  • Deliveries are typically kerbside.
  • Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
  • Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.

Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery

Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.

Returns

Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.

Questions and Answers

Can you paint moisture resistant MDF?

Yes, you can paint moisture-resistant MDF, but you must use a solvent-based primer or a specialist MDF primer first. Avoid water-based primers for the initial coat, as they can cause the wood fibres to swell and create a fuzzy, uneven surface. Be sure to pay extra attention to the edges, which are more porous and require multiple coats of sealer or primer to ensure the board remains moisture-resistant. If you are unsure about the best finish for a high-moisture area, it is always a good idea to consult a professional decorator.

Is MR MDF suitable for bathrooms?

Yes, it is suitable for bathrooms as it can handle the high humidity and steam typical of those spaces. However, it is not waterproof and must be fully sealed and painted on all sides and edges to prevent water from soaking into the fibres.

answer supplied by James Herbert on 08 May 2025

Can this moisture resistant MDF get wet?

Moisture-resistant (MR) MDF is designed for high-humidity areas like kitchens or bathrooms, but it is not waterproof. While it can handle steam and occasional dampness, it will swell, warp, and eventually degrade if it comes into direct contact with standing water or persistent leaks.
