What Is 10x2 Timber 4.8m?
10x2 Timber 4.8m is a high-performance structural softwood, available in precise 4.8-metre lengths. Graded to the rigorous C24 standard, it delivers exceptional load-bearing capacity and tensile strength in a variety of demanding construction applications.
With nominal dimensions of 47mm x 250mm (finished size: 45mm x 245mm), this timber is kiln-dried to optimise dimensional stability, reducing the risk of warping or movement over time. The drying process ensures consistent moisture content, enhancing the timber's performance in varying environmental conditions.
The combination of its large cross-section (providing inherent stiffness and strength), high C24 strength grade (enhancing load capacity), and pressure treatment (providing durability against rot and insects) makes this timber versatile for a wide range of demanding structural applications, both indoors and outdoors (above ground). Ideal uses include floor joists, roof rafters, purlins, robust timber framing, and decking subframes, making it a reliable choice for professionals.
For ease of use, this sawn timber has been regularised for dimensional accuracy and features eased edges for comfortable handling.
Please Note: The finished size of our carcassing timber may vary slightly from the nominal dimensions. You can expect to receive timber that is finished with a thickness 2mm less and a width 5mm less than the nominal measurements stated. Colour and finish are representative only and may vary slightly as this is a natural product.
C24 Strength Grading Explained
The C24 grade is a key indicator of structural performance, defined by British Standard BS 5268 and harmonised European standard BS EN 14081.
- Higher Strength: C24 denotes a superior strength grade compared to the more common C16. It possesses greater bending strength, density, and load-bearing capacity.
- Demanding Applications: This makes C24 timber the preferred choice for applications requiring higher performance, such as longer spans for floor joists or roof rafters, or elements under significant load.
- Visual & Machine Grading: Timber is graded either visually or by machine to assess characteristics like knot size and frequency, slope of grain, and density, ensuring it meets the C24 structural requirements. Every piece of graded timber should carry a stamp indicating its grade, origin, and treatment.
Applications
- Roof Structures: Ideal for roof joists, rafters, and purlins, capable of handling significant roof loads over good spans.
- Floor Joists: Commonly used for ground and upper floor joists, providing a strong and stable base for flooring.
- Timber Framing: Suitable for constructing robust timber frame walls and structures.
- Decking Subframes: Creates durable and long-lasting support structures for raised garden decking.
- Large Stud Walls: Used in studwork where higher strength or wider spacing is required.
- Garden Structures: Suitable for substantial pergolas, carports, and other large garden builds (ensure appropriate Use Class and fixings).
- Formwork: Can be used for creating temporary moulds for concrete (though often lower grade timber is sufficient).
- General Carcassing & Joinery: Applicable in various structural joinery tasks where strength is paramount.
Benefits
- High Structural Strength: C24 grade offers superior load-bearing capacity and excellent tensile strength for demanding applications.
- Enhanced Durability: Pressure-treated (UC3) for long-lasting protection against rot and insects in internal and external environments (above ground).
- Improved Stability: Kiln-dried to minimise warping and shrinkage.
- Convenient Length: 4.8m length is ideal for spanning larger gaps or efficient cutting.
- Dimensional Consistency: Regularised finish ensures reliable sizing for construction accuracy.
- Versatility: Suitable for a wide array of structural and carcassing applications.
- Compliance: Meets relevant British and European standards for structural timber.
