What Is 4x2 Timber 4.8m?
Sawn Treated Timber (4x2) 4.8m is a high-quality, pressure-treated timber product designed for a wide range of construction and structural applications.
Available in C16 and C24 grades, this timber offers varying levels of strength to suit different load-bearing requirements. C24 is a higher-grade timber suitable for demanding applications such as roof trusses and heavy structural framing, while C16 is ideal for lighter framing and non-load-bearing elements.
Both grades of timber are treated with Tanalith 'E', a high-performance wood preservative that provides exceptional resistance to rot, decay, and insect attack. This treatment makes the timber highly durable and well-suited for use in both internal and external environments, especially in areas prone to moisture or fluctuating weather conditions.
We supply quality 50x100 timber in various lengths: 2.4m, 3m, 3.6m, 4.2m, 4.8m and 6m, all of which are sold in a consistent thickness of 47mm.
Please Note: The finished size of our carcassing timber may vary slightly from the nominal dimensions. You can expect to receive timber that is finished with a thickness 2mm less and a width 5mm less than the nominal measurements stated. Colour and finish are representative only and may vary slightly as this is a natural product.
Applications
Despite their difference in quality, both C16 and C24 timber will deliver well in most construction projects. We recommend using the stronger, more dependable C24 timber grade for larger-scale projects (or in applications where strength is critical, such as balconies, terraces, and bridges).
47x100 treated timber can be used in many different indoor and outdoor applications such as:
- Structural Framing: A standard choice for constructing internal stud walls and partitions.
- Roofing: Suitable for roof joists and rafters in certain designs and spans (C24 recommended for optimal load-bearing; always consult span tables or structural calculations).
- Flooring: Can be used as floor joists for standard domestic loads (C24 often preferred for wider joist centres or higher loads).
- Decking Subframes: The pressure treatment provides essential durability for long-lasting decking bases (C16 is popular, C24 offers maximum belt-and-braces strength).
- Garden Structures: Excellent for building robust sheds, pergolas, carports, raised beds, and other outdoor projects needing treated timber.
- General Carcassing & Joinery: A fundamental size for countless construction and repair tasks.

Choosing Your Grade: C16 vs C24 Explained
Understanding the difference between C16 and C24 is key to selecting the right timber for structural integrity and cost-effectiveness:
- C16 Grade Timber:
- Strength: Standard UK structural grade, reliably strong for most common building applications.
- Appearance: Allows for slightly more knots and potential natural characteristics compared to C24.
- Common Uses: Internal stud walls, general construction framing, fencing rails, often suitable for standard decking subframes.
- Cost: Generally the more budget-friendly structural option.
- C24 Grade Timber:
- Strength: Premium structural grade, offering significantly higher strength, stiffness, and load-bearing capacity due to stricter grading rules (fewer/smaller knots, tighter grain).
- Appearance: Usually presents a 'cleaner' look with fewer visible knots or defects.
- Common Uses: Roof joists, floor joists, applications requiring wider spans or supporting heavier loads, high-specification decking subframes. Often specified in architectural plans where performance is critical.
- Cost: Reflects its superior strength and quality characteristics.
Which Grade Do You Need?
For many standard projects like internal non-load bearing studwork or garden structures, C16 provides reliable performance cost-effectively. For demanding structural roles like floor or roof joists, or where building regulations or plans specify it, C24 offers maximum strength and peace of mind.
Customer Reviews
Overall really happy with what I received, minimal amount of knots and most pieces were straight. Better quality than other online stores I've ordered from in the past.
