What Is 9x2 Timber 4.8m?
9x2 Timber 4.8m is a premium C24 graded structural timber, measuring a nominal 47mm x 225mm (commonly known as 9x2 inches) and supplied in a 4.8-metre length. Pressure treated for long-lasting protection against decay and insect attack, and kiln-dried for enhanced stability, this regularised softwood timber is the professional choice for projects where structural integrity and reliability are paramount, such as floor joists, roof rafters, and heavy-duty framing. Its high strength-to-weight ratio makes it suitable for achieving longer spans or supporting heavier loads compared to lower grades like C16.
Please Note: The finished size of our carcassing timber may vary slightly from the nominal dimensions. You can expect to receive timber that is finished with a thickness 2mm less and a width 5mm less than the nominal measurements stated. Colour and finish are representative only and may vary slightly as this is a natural product.
Applications
9x2 4.8m carcassing timber is a kiln-dried treated structural graded softwood that is most often seen in construction where a grading stamp is needed. It can be utilised in a variety of ways both internally and externally, and it's widely used in floor joists, roof joists, and timber framing construction.
Carcassing timber is generally used in the following building applications:
- Stud walls
- Joists for roofs, floors and decking
- Structural and general joinery applications
- Timber framing construction
Structural Grade: C24 (to BS EN 338 / BS EN 14081)
- C24 is a high-strength structural timber grade defined under BS EN 338 and assessed in accordance with BS EN 14081. It offers superior performance in key areas such as bending strength, stiffness, compression strength, and density when compared to the more common C16 grade.
- Each piece of C24 timber is either visually or machine graded to ensure it meets strict mechanical standards for structural use. This makes it ideal for demanding applications such as load-bearing walls, floor joists, roof structures, and longer-span designs, where strength, durability and minimal deflection are essential.
- C24 timber also provides better fixing strength due to its higher density and typically presents a cleaner, more uniform appearance with fewer knots or defects. It is commonly sourced from slow-grown regions, contributing to its tighter grain and consistent performance.
Handling & Storage
- Store timber flat and level, raised off the ground on bearers to prevent moisture absorption from the ground.
- Keep the timber under cover, protected from rain, snow, and prolonged direct sunlight, which can cause surface checking or affect moisture content.
- Allow for good air circulation around the stack to help maintain a stable moisture content.
- Handle timber carefully to avoid damaging the regularised surfaces and eased edges.
- Always wear gloves when handling treated timber to protect against splinters and minimise skin contact with preservative residues.
