What Is 25mm EPS?
25mm EPS is a closed cell insulation board that has been around since the 1950's. When compared to other rigid insulations, 25mm EPS70 Polystyrene Insulation Board is without doubt the most cost effective.
EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) comprises 98% trapped air and only 2% plastic. The lightweight cellular plastic material within EPS consists of small spherical-shaped particles which harbour the trapped air. It is this microcellular closed cell construction which provides EPS with its impressive compressive strength of 70kPa, endowing it with shock absorbing characteristics.
However, despite its compressive strength, EPS70 does not offer much in the way of thermal or acoustic performance. In terms of thermal conductivity, the boards come in at a less effective rating of 0.037W/mK. We suggest if you're after excellent thermal performance, to opt for Phenolic insulation. For sound dampening properties, consider using Rockwool RWA45 25mm slab.
Whilst EPS doesn't quite top the charts with its soundproofing and thermal performance, it does offer exceptional sustainability and environmental credentials. The boards contain no CFCs or HCFCs and have Zero Ozone Depletion Potential along with low Global Warming Potential. They are also 100% recyclable at many stages of their life cycle thanks to their biodegradable makeup.
Where is 25mm EPS70 Used?
25mm EPS70's most common applications are below a concrete slab with concrete poured on top or also being used as a walkway board with chipboard laminated to the EPS70.
It can also be put to use in wall and attic applications, as well as under screeds, in heated floor slabs, below suspended slabs or between joists.
EPS's compressive strength also makes it a great choice for a range of different floor applications; EPS boards are compatible with masonry and timber substrates.
When applying EPS, we recommend you use a dual fixing method to fix the boards to the substrate. This typically involves applying adhesive to the board and then using fixings to secure the hold.
25mm EPS70 Insulation Storage & Handling
We recommend using a hot wire cutter to melt the insulation, slicing through the boards to provide a perfect cut every time. If you are not able to get a hold of a hot wire cutter, a simple hand saw or builder's knife will suffice.
Thanks to EPS's lightweight composition, the boards are easily carried and installed manually on-site without the need for specialist equipment or skills. It also requires no additional safety gear as the material is non-toxic and chemically inert.
We advise that you store the boards under a cover in dry conditions and handle in well ventilated areas.
