Product Overview

BS1088-certified marine-grade plywood sheet, measuring 2440mm x 1220mm (8' x 4') with an 18mm thickness.

Made from durable tropical hardwood veneers and bonded with waterproof adhesive, it resists swelling, warping, delamination, and rot even under prolonged moisture exposure.

Unlike standard plywood, it contains no core voids, preventing water entrapment and improving overall strength.

Widely used for hull planking, flooring, and heavy-duty marine construction, the solid hardwood face is pre-sanded and can be left natural, stained, or varnished.

Features & Benefits

  • BS 1088 Certification: Verified compliance with British Standards for marine-grade plywood ensures the board contains no core gaps and utilises high-quality tropical hardwood.
  • WBP Phenolic Bonding: Weather and Boil Proof resin prevents delamination of veneers even in saturated or high-temperature conditions.
  • Void-Free Core: The absence of internal gaps ensures consistent strength across the entire sheet and prevents moisture from pooling within the board.
  • Rot-Resistant Hardwood: Constructed from naturally durable timber species that offer inherent resistance to fungal attack compared to standard softwood plys.
  • Impact Resistance: High-density hardwood veneers provide a robust surface capable of withstanding mechanical stress and heavy-duty use.
  • Moisture Performance: Withstands long-term immersion without structural failure, unlike MR MDF or standard plywood products.
  • 2440mm x 1220mm Dimensions: The standard sheet size covers 2.98m² per board to maximize surface coverage and minimise off-cut waste.
  • Thickness 18mm: Heavy-duty board for hull planking, structural flooring, and demanding joinery.

Please Note: Colour and finish are representative only and may vary slightly as this is a natural product.

Applications

  • Marine hull and deck construction: High-specification BS1088 boards provide the necessary void-free core and durable hardwood veneers for structural boat building and repair.
  • External joinery and landscaping: Superior moisture resistance makes 18mm marine plywood ideal for roof supports, planters, and high-end garden structures exposed to the elements.
  • Vehicle and van lining: Impact-resistant hardwood construction handles heavy-duty use and resists degradation from condensation in commercial vehicle interiors.
  • Balcony and roof terrace decking: Structural 18mm profile provides a stable, rot-resistant substrate for waterproof membranes on external elevated platforms.
  • High-humidity interior joinery: Durable core and face veneers prevent warping and delamination in commercial kitchens, laundries, and indoor swimming pool environments.

Installation Guidance

  • Seal edges and faces: Extends service life when exposed outdoors.
  • Use waterproof fixings and adhesives: Maintains performance under wet conditions.
  • Apply varnish or paint if exposed: Enhances appearance and adds further protection.

Compliance & Performance

  • Standard: Certified to BS1088 for marine-grade plywood.
  • Veneer quality: Manufactured from durable tropical hardwood, free of core voids.
  • Bonding: Waterproof adhesive suitable for continuous wet exposure.
  • Classification note: Formerly referred to as WBP plywood; superseded by BS1088 and EN standards.

How delivery works

We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.

Delivery areas

Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.

If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.

What to expect on delivery day

  • Deliveries are typically kerbside.
  • Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
  • Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.

Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery

Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.

Returns

Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.

Questions and Answers

What is BS1088 plywood?

BS 1088 is the British Standard specification for marine plywood, ensuring the board is manufactured to withstand high-moisture environments and immersion. To meet this standard, the plywood must use WBP (Weather and Boil Proof) glue and contain no internal core gaps where water could collect.

answer supplied by James Herbert on 04 February 2026

Is marine plywood waterproof?

Marine plywood is made with waterproof glue (WBP) to prevent delamination, but the wood itself is not naturally waterproof and will eventually rot if left raw. To ensure it stays watertight and lasts, you must seal all surfaces and edges with a high-quality marine-grade varnish, epoxy, or paint. Important: If your project involves critical structural safety or immersion in water, please consult a professional surveyor or specialist builder to ensure your sealing method is sufficient for the environment.

answer supplied by Vigu Gnanadevan on 22 August 2025

What is the difference between marine and exterior plywood?

The main difference lies in the quality of the internal layers and the wood species used. While both use waterproof glue, marine plywood has zero internal gaps (voids) and uses higher-quality, rot-resistant veneers throughout.

answer supplied by James Herbert on 05 April 2025

Is it possible to use wood stain on this product?

I need to stain this product with Rich Mahogany wood stain to match existing decor. Is that possible with this ply?

Yes, you can use a Rich Mahogany wood stain on 18mm Marine Plywood to match your existing décor. Marine plywood is typically made with high-quality veneers and waterproof glue, making it durable and suitable for staining.
