What Is 18mm Marine Plywood?

18mm Marine Plywood is a high-performance, load-bearing sheet material, named for its widespread use in marine applications, such as boat and ship construction, where strength and moisture resistance are essential.

Unlike standard plywood, 18mm Marine Plywood is bonded with waterproof adhesive, ensuring it remains resistant to swelling, warping, and delamination even when exposed to moisture. While general moisture-resistant materials like MR MDF can tolerate some moisture, Marine Plywood is specifically designed to withstand prolonged water immersion with minimal impact on its performance.

18mm Marine Ply offers outstanding moisture resistance in both interior and exterior applications - such as flooring, roofing, walls, general joinery, and external joinery. While naturally resistant to moisture, you can easily increase the service life of Marine Plywood by sealing both the edges and faces of the sheets.

Marine Plywood is made from solid veneer wood, meaning the finished surface gives a wooden appearance. Therefore, images may vary slightly from delivered products due to the natural variation in colour and grain.

Applications

18mm Marine Plywood is purposed for structural use and conforms to BS1088 (the British standard specification for Marine Plywood). This assures that it is manufactured from durable Meranti hardwood veneers.

This stamp of approval ensures that the product will perform well in almost any environment.
However, it can also be used in the following applications:

  • Shop fitting
  • Storage boxes
  • Bathrooms
  • Sheds
  • Walkways
  • Kitchens
  • Patios
  • Indoor vehicle storage areas
  • Roof supports
  • Cold frames

If used for an aesthetic application such as shelving, we suggest sanding and adding a layer of varnish to enhance its overall appearance.

Benefits

  • Moisture resistant - retains its integrity when in contact with water
  • Suitable for flooring, roofing and wall applications
  • Holds laminate, paint and polish well
  • Pliable design - can bend without cracking or comprising structural integrity
  • Offers superior impact resistance
  • Lack of voids and holes makes the product more structurally sound

Size

Marine Plywood 18mm comes in a 2440mm x 1220mm x 18mm sheet, giving a square metre size of roughly 2.98m2.

Manufacturing Process

Marine Ply is manufactured using many layers of water-resistant tropical hardwood that are bonded together with waterproof glue.

Unlike standard plywood, Marine Plywood is free of air pockets and core voids, reducing the likelihood of water getting trapped between the layers. If you were to slice through a sheet of regular plywood, you'd be able to spot holes and voids within the layers.

In avoiding these holes, Marine Plywood boasts greater structural integrity and rot-resistant qualities, making it suitable for demanding requirements where the board is likely to be exposed to the elements.

Both the quality and lay-up of the sheet's veneers render Marine Plywood an extremely robust and resilient product.
