What is Elliotis 9mm Softwood Plywood?
9mm Elliotis Pine Plywood is a versatile structural-grade softwood panel, supplied in standard 2440mm x 1220mm (approximately 8' x 4') sheets. Each sheet covers approximately 2.98m² and has a typical weight of around 16kg.
Sourced from Pine grown in Brazil, this engineered wood panel is manufactured to meet the requirements of BS EN 636-2, designating it for structural use in humid conditions (Service Class 2). This means it can withstand exposure to moisture that may occur occasionally, for instance, during construction phases, provided it is allowed to dry and any cut edges are appropriately sealed.
Valued as a dependable roofing plywood and a highly cost-effective structural alternative to many hardwood plywoods, this 9mm Elliotis Pine board is a common choice for constructing walls (as sheathing), floors (as underlayment or a subfloor in light applications), site hoardings, and for temporary protection measures.
It is suitable for both interior applications and exterior applications where it is treated (all faces and edges sealed with an appropriate protective finish) and shielded from direct, prolonged weather exposure, aligning with its EN636-2 classification.
Grade: C+ /C
This plywood features a C+/C veneer grade. The C+ face is the better surface, presenting a smooth, sanded finish suitable for general construction purposes and some visible applications where a utility finish is acceptable.
The reverse C grade face may exhibit more natural wood characteristics, knots, and minor imperfections. As a natural pine product, variations in grain and the presence of sound knots are inherent.
Applications
- Wall Sheathing (Racking Strength): Used on timber frame walls to provide racking resistance (preventing sideways movement) and create a solid backing for cladding systems or internal linings.
- Roof Decking (Sarking): Forms a solid deck over roof joists or rafters in pitched roof constructions, providing a substrate for roofing felt/underlayment and the final roof covering (e.g., tiles or shingles).
- Flooring Underlayment: Can be used as an underlayment over existing timber subfloors or joists (with appropriate spacing, typically not exceeding 400mm centres for 9mm) to provide a smooth, level base for certain types of floor coverings. It is generally for light domestic use in this thickness.
- Site Hoarding & Temporary Structures: A common and economical choice for creating secure temporary barriers, site enclosures, and protection screens on construction sites.
- General Joinery & Carpentry: Suitable for utility applications such as basic shelving (with adequate support), workbenches, packing cases, crates, and various DIY construction projects.
- Shuttering (Light-Duty Formwork): Can be used for creating simple moulds for pouring concrete in non-critical applications where a high-quality concrete finish is not the primary concern and for limited re-uses.
- Soffits and Protected Fascia Components: In sheltered locations when primed, painted, and all edges are thoroughly sealed.
Benefits
- Cost-Effective: As a more affordable alternative to hardwood plywood, it provides significant cost savings without compromising on quality or performance.
- Versatile Applications: Its broad range of applications makes it a highly versatile material, suitable for everything from structural work to fine joinery.
- Exceptional Strength and Stability: Excellent load-bearing properties ensure it can handle substantial weight and stress, suiting it for use in critical structural applications.
- Ease of Use: Can be cut, screwed, glued, and painted, facilitating a smooth and efficient construction process. Its compatibility with both hand and machine tools enhances its utility in various settings.
- Interior and Covered Exterior Use: While primarily designed for interior use, it can also be employed in covered exterior applications if properly treated, offering limited resistance to moisture during construction.
