What Are 20mm Limestone Chippings?

20mm limestone chippings are a versatile and hard-wearing aggregate commonly used in landscaping, ground cover, and drainage applications. Sourced from natural limestone, these angular stones typically range in colour from light grey to off-white.

Being a natural quarried product, variations in colour (typically shades of grey, buff, or cream) and texture are inherent. This product is primarily chosen for its performance as an aggregate; it is not selected for high decorative uniformity in the same way as premium decorative-only stones.

The 20mm grading provides an optimal combination of effective compaction for stability and sufficient void space for excellent drainage. This makes 20mm limestone chippings a favoured material for constructing driveways, garden paths, and borders.

Applications

  • Garden Borders and Raised Beds: Offers excellent ground cover, helps reduce weed growth and retains soil moisture.
  • Pathways and Footpaths: Creates well-defined walkways with a smooth, comfortable surface underfoot.
  • Driveways: Hard-wearing enough to handle vehicle traffic.
  • Paving & Patio Edging: Provides a neat border around paving slabs, helping improve drainage and suppress weed growth when installed over a membrane.
  • Shed and Greenhouse Surrounds: Delivers a stable, free-draining surface around garden structures, reducing mud and protecting foundations from excess moisture.
  • Tree Rings and Feature Beds: Used around tree bases and planting beds to lock in soil moisture.
  • Decorative Mulch Alternative: Long-lasting alternative to bark mulch, particularly suited to gravel gardens and Mediterranean-style landscaping.

Benefits

  • Natural Product: Naturally occurring aggregate, providing an authentic and organic aesthetic to your landscape.
  • Smooth Texture: Smooth surface ensures a comfortable walking experience and a refined look.
  • Durability: Hard-wearing and suitable for high-traffic areas like driveways and footpaths.
  • Versatility: Perfect for various construction and landscaping applications including garden beds, paths and driveways.
  • Excellent Drainage Properties: Ideal for areas prone to wet conditions, these chippings help prevent waterlogging and maintain healthy plant growth.
  • Low Maintenance: Easy to maintain, requiring minimal upkeep.

Installation Tips

  • Prepare the Area: Clear the site of weeds, roots, and debris. Lay a quality weed membrane to reduce regrowth and keep the chippings clean.
  • Add a Sub-Base (If Required): For driveways or high-traffic areas, lay a sub-base of MOT Type 1 or crushed concrete for added strength and stability.
  • Spread the Chippings: Evenly spread to an approximate depth of 40-50mm for paths or up to 75mm for driveways. Use a rake to level and compact lightly for best results.
  • Edge the Area: Install edging to contain the chippings and prevent movement over time.

Maintenance Advice
  • Rake Occasionally: Redistribute stones and remove debris to keep the surface fresh and even.
  • Weed Control: Keep an eye out for weeds growing through and remove as needed.
  • Top-Up Annually: Replenish any low areas or compacted patches to maintain full coverage and depth.
