What is 20mm Gold Gravel?

20mm Golden Gravel is a naturally occurring, quarried aggregate, predominantly composed of flint, though blends may include quartzite or similar hard stones. This composition grants it significant hardness and durability, making it a resilient choice for various applications.

Its defining feature is its attractive colour palette - a warm, inviting mix of golden yellow, buff, tan, brown, and cream hues. This natural blend creates a bright, contemporary finish that complements diverse garden styles. When wet, these colours intensify, becoming deeper and richer, adding visual depth, particularly noticeable and desirable around water features.

The shape of the gravel is typically angular or semi-angular. This angularity is a significant functional advantage, as the stones interlock effectively, creating a more stable and compact surface compared to rounded aggregates. This interlocking property is particularly beneficial for driveways and paths that experience regular traffic. While predominantly angular, minor variations including some rounded stones might be present as it is a natural product.

Also Known As: Common Alternative Names

20mm Golden Gravel is often marketed under various alternative names. Common alternatives include:

  • Golden Flint / Golden Flint Gravel
  • Solent Gravel
  • Corn Gravel
  • Yellow Shingle
  • Chard Flint
  • Autumn Gold

Applications

  • Garden Paths and Driveways: Its durability and attractive appearance make it an excellent choice for creating elegant and functional pathways and driveways.
  • Patios and Outdoor Spaces: Use it to enhance the aesthetic appeal of patios and outdoor areas, providing a warm and inviting look.
  • Alpine Gardens, Rock Gardens and Garden Beds: It adds a striking visual element to rock gardens and garden beds, complementing plants and other landscaping features. If adding to water features or ponds please ensure the product is suitable.
  • Drainage Solutions: The gravel’s permeability ensures effective drainage, making it suitable for areas prone to waterlogging.

20mm Nominal Grade (10-20mm Actual)

The term "20mm Golden Gravel" refers to its nominal size, which is determined by the industrial screening process used during production, rather than indicating that every single stone is precisely 20mm. Understanding this distinction is important for managing expectations regarding the delivered product.

The grading process involves passing the quarried aggregate over a series of sieves or meshes. For 20mm nominal gravel, the material passes through a top sieve with 20mm apertures but is retained on a bottom sieve with smaller apertures, typically 10mm. Consequently, the actual size range of the stones in a bag of 20mm Golden Gravel will typically be between 10mm and 20mm. This variation is standard practice in the aggregate industry worldwide.

This 10-20mm size range offers specific advantages for different applications.

  • For driveways, it provides an excellent balance: the stones are large enough to be less likely to get stuck in vehicle tyre treads (a common issue with 10mm gravel, which is typically 4-10mm actual size) while still being small enough, combined with their angular shape, to interlock and compact well, creating a stable surface.
  • For paths, it offers a good compromise between stability underfoot and walking comfort.

Why Buy Golden Gravel 20mm Bulk Bag?
  • Cost-Effective Solution: Purchasing 20mm golden gravel in bulk often results in significant savings compared to buying smaller quantities. By choosing a bulk bag, you benefit from a lower per-unit cost at a reasonable price, making it an economical choice for large-scale projects.
  • Consistent Quality and Colour: A bulk bag ensures that you receive a consistent grade and colour of gravel. This uniformity is crucial for maintaining a cohesive and polished look throughout your landscape.
  • Reduced Frequency of Purchases: With a 0.5 cubic metre bulk bag, approximately weighing 800kg, you have ample gravel to cover larger areas, reducing the need for multiple trips. This convenience saves time and effort, especially for extensive projects.
  • Versatility for Various Uses: The 20mm size is ideal for a range of applications, from garden paths and driveways to decorative ground cover and rock gardens. Having a bulk supply on hand allows you to tackle different aspects of your project with ease.
  • Efficient Storage: A bulk bag is typically designed for easy storage and handling. It helps keep your worksite organised and minimises clutter, allowing for a more efficient workflow.

Long-Term Maintenance Tips

While Golden Gravel is low-maintenance, some periodic care will keep it looking its best:

  • Raking: Occasionally rake the gravel surface to redistribute stones that may have shifted due to traffic, fill in any low spots, remove surface debris, and maintain an even appearance.
  • Weed Control: Although the membrane prevents most weeds, some may germinate on the surface from airborne seeds. Remove these promptly by hand, ensuring you pull out the roots. Alternatively, spot-treat with a suitable weed killer (glyphosate-based recommended for effectiveness, or household options like boiling water or salt, used cautiously to avoid harming nearby plants).
  • Cleaning: Surface dust and dirt can usually be removed by rinsing with a garden hose. For more stubborn dirt, green algae (common in damp, shaded areas), or moss, scrub the affected area with a stiff brush using soapy water or a vinegar solution, then rinse thoroughly. Specialised patio cleaners can also be used.
  • Debris Removal: Regularly remove fallen leaves, twigs, and other organic debris, especially during autumn. Use a rake or a leaf blower on a low setting to avoid displacing the gravel. Decomposing organic matter can stain the gravel over time.
  • Topping Up: Over several years, particularly on driveways, some gravel may get displaced or pushed into the sub-base through compaction. If areas become thin or the membrane starts showing, top up with fresh gravel to maintain the recommended depth.
