Product Overview
20mm black ice chippings produced from a blend of black basalt and light blue-grey marble.
Crushed and screened to a nominal 20mm size, these chippings have a sharp, angular profile that allows them to interlock when laid. This creates a stable surface suitable for driveways, pathways, and borders, where resistance to movement under foot or vehicle traffic is important.
Often chosen for their contemporary look, they combine contrasting tones of black, grey, and pale blue. When dry, the appearance is muted and matt; when wet, the colours deepen, giving a striking high-contrast finish.
As a durable mineral aggregate, these chippings withstand frost and rain, will not rot or decompose, and need only occasional raking or top-ups to keep their appearance.
Features & Benefits
- Distinctive colour blend: Black, grey, and blue tones provide a clean, modern aesthetic.
- Angular particle shape: Compacts well to create a stable surface in both construction and landscaping use.
- Free-draining aggregate: Supports natural drainage and reduces the risk of surface water pooling.
- Durable natural stone: Withstands weather cycles, including frost and heavy rainfall, without breaking down.
- Weed suppression with membrane: Reduces regrowth when laid over a permeable geotextile.
- Low-maintenance surface: Requires only periodic raking and occasional top-ups to retain appearance.
- Nominal 20mm grading: Gives strength and stability for driveways, paths, and borders.
- Cost-effective in bulk: 800kg bulk bags reduce cost per m² compared with smaller pack sizes.
Applications
- Driveways: Provides a firm, load-bearing surface for domestic driveways when laid over a suitable sub-base.
- Pathways and ground cover: Creates a durable surface for pedestrian areas and suppresses weeds when laid over a membrane.
- Borders and edging: Useful as a functional, low-maintenance finish around beds and lawns.
- Decorative landscaping: Enhances outdoor spaces with a contrasting mix of tones that stand out when wet or dry.
Installation Guidance
- Prepare and level the base: Remove vegetation, stones, and debris, firming the ground to reduce later sinking.
- Install edging restraints: Use boards, metal strips, or kerbs to prevent migration and keep paths neat.
- Lay permeable weed membrane: Blocks light to minimise weed growth while allowing water to drain freely.
Compliance & Performance
- Material specification: Crushed basalt and marble, angular in form, 20mm nominal size, with natural variation in colour from grey, black, and pale blue tones.
- Performance characteristics: Durable, free-draining decorative aggregate suitable for driveways, pathways, borders, and ground cover.

How delivery works
We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.
Delivery areas
Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.
If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.
What to expect on delivery day
- Deliveries are typically kerbside.
- Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
- Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.
Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery
Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.
Returns
Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.
