Product Overview

Play grade bark chippings produced from carefully processed tree material, supplied in a 500L bulk bag.

Unlike standard garden bark or mulch, play bark undergoes rigorous screening and treatment to ensure it is free from contaminants and sharp fragments, making it suitable for children’s play areas.

Its key purpose is to create a soft, impact-absorbing surface that cushions falls and reduces the risk of injury, providing peace of mind for parents, schools, and childcare providers.

With natural resilience, play bark chips are durable enough to withstand constant foot traffic and weather exposure while still maintaining their cushioning qualities.

At the same time, they provide additional benefits associated with organic bark products: moisture retention, weed suppression, soil improvement, and root insulation.

Often chosen for playgrounds, schools, parks, and gardens, play bark balances safety, functionality, and aesthetics. Its natural mid-brown tones blend into outdoor spaces while offering a protective surface that is both practical and visually appealing.

Features & Benefits

  • Impact absorption: Provides a softer landing surface, reducing injury risk from falls.
  •  Play grade quality: Specially processed to be free from sharp particles, debris, and contaminants.
  •  Durable natural chip: Hard-wearing, withstands heavy foot traffic and weather cycles without rapid breakdown.
  •  Moisture retention: Helps maintain hydration in underlying soil.
  •  Root insulation: Protects plants in colder weather, reducing risk of loss.
  •  Low maintenance surface: Requires only occasional raking and top-ups in high-use areas.
  •  Aesthetic appeal: Natural colour blends with play environments and garden landscapes.
  •  Environmentally friendly: 100% biodegradable and sustainable material.
  •  Cost-effective in bulk: 500L bulk bags reduce cost per m² compared with smaller pack sizes.

Applications

  • Play areas: Primary use, providing an impact-absorbing surface that cushions children’s falls.
  •  Schools & childcare facilities: Creates safer outdoor spaces for play and recreation.
  •  Gardens: Suitable for family gardens, particularly in areas where children play frequently.
  •  Borders & flower beds: Adds a decorative, natural finish when used as mulch around planting schemes.

Installation Guidance

  • Prepare and level the base: Remove vegetation, stones, and debris before application.
  •  Install to correct depth: Apply to a minimum depth of 300mm to provide impact protection for falls up to 3m.
  •  Contain with edging: Use retaining boards or kerbs to keep bark in place over time.
  •  Maintain surface: Rake regularly to ensure even coverage and top up as needed in high-wear areas.
  •  Conduct a risk assessment: Always check the depth and surface suitability against the intended play equipment height.

Compliance & Performance

  • Material specification: Play grade bark chippings, processed from mixed hardwood chip, screened and treated for safety, supplied in 500L bulk bags.
  •  Performance characteristics: Impact-absorbing, durable, natural surface suitable for children’s play areas, gardens, borders, and decorative landscaping.
  •  Installation requirement: 300mm depth provides critical fall height protection up to 3m when correctly installed.

How delivery works

We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.

Delivery areas

Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.

If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.

What to expect on delivery day

  • Deliveries are typically kerbside.
  • Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
  • Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.

Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery

Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.

Returns

Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.
