Product Overview

Garden bark chippings produced from processed outer tree bark, supplied in an 800kg bulk bag.

Unlike woodchip, which is made by mechanically chipping the inner wood of tree trunks and branches, these chippings are derived predominantly from the bark layer. This distinction gives them different properties in both appearance and performance.

Screened and chipped to a nominal 10-40mm size, the pieces provide a uniform, fibrous texture that performs both decorative and functional roles.

When spread over soil, they create a natural ground cover that suppresses weeds, conserves moisture, and insulates plant roots against temperature extremes.

Suitable for both ornamental and functional gardens, they are often chosen as a practical and eco-friendly solution for enhancing outdoor spaces. Their natural mid-brown colour softens with age, weathering into a lighter, silvery tone.

As an organic product, bark chippings slowly decompose over time, improving soil structure and adding valuable organic matter. For best results, they should be topped up annually and any weeds that appear should be removed promptly.

Features & Benefits

  • Natural bark composition: Provides an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic mulches.
  • Weed suppression: Creates a dense barrier that reduces regrowth when applied over bare soil.
  • Moisture retention: Slows evaporation, helping plants remain hydrated for longer.
  • Root protection: Insulates against temperature extremes, safeguarding plants through hot summers and cold winters.
  • Soil improvement: Breaks down gradually, enhancing soil texture and fertility over time.
  • Low-maintenance cover: Reduces weeding and conserves water while offering a neat finish.
  • Decorative finish: Natural mid-brown tones enhance borders, beds, and tree bases.
  • Practical & eco-friendly: Offers a sustainable, low-maintenance way to cover bare ground.
  • Cost-effective in bulk: 800kg bags provide economical coverage for larger garden projects.

Applications

  • Mulching flower beds & borders: Retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and improves soil over time.
  • Around trees & shrubs: Forms a protective mulch ring that conserves water and prevents mower or strimmer damage.
  • Pathways: Provides a soft, natural walking surface when laid over firm ground with edging in place; paths will compact over time and require topping up.
  • General ground cover: Offers a tidy, low-maintenance finish in areas where planting is minimal.

Installation Guidance

  • Prepare the surface: Clear soil of weeds and debris, and firm the ground before application.
  • Apply at depth: Spread to a depth of 50–75mm for optimal weed suppression and moisture control.
  • Keep clear of stems: Avoid direct contact with plant stems and tree trunks to reduce risk of rot.
  • Top up annually: Replenish as needed to maintain effective coverage and a fresh appearance.
  • Remove weeds promptly: Clear any growth that emerges before it becomes established.

Compliance & Performance

  • Material specification: Processed tree bark, screened and chipped to 10–40mm particle size, supplied as landscaping grade.
  • Performance characteristics: Effective, natural ground cover providing weed suppression, moisture retention, soil improvement, and decorative appeal.
  • Important note: Not certified to BS EN 1177. Do not use as a play surface. For children’s play areas, use certified Play Grade Bark.

How delivery works

We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.

Delivery areas

Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.

If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.

What to expect on delivery day

  • Deliveries are typically kerbside.
  • Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
  • Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.

Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery

Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.

Returns

Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.
