What is A Garden Bark Chippings Bulk Bag?

Garden Bark Chippings are small pieces of processed tree bark used as a decorative and functional ground cover (mulch) in landscaping. Unlike wood chip, which is produced by mechanically chipping the inner wood (xylem/sapwood) of trees including trunks and branches, bark chippings are derived predominantly from the tree's outer protective bark layer.

Our 500L Garden Bark Chippings Bulk Bag is a practical and eco-friendly solution for gardeners looking to enhance their outdoor space while improving soil health. It offers a variety of benefits, including weed suppression, moisture retention, and insulation for plant roots.

These chippings are suitable for both ornamental and functional gardens. Whether used for aesthetic purposes or as a natural weed barrier, they provide an economical, low-maintenance way to cover bare soil.

Compared to traditional bark mulch, our chippings not only effectively prevent weeds by blocking sunlight and inhibiting their growth, but also reduce water evaporation, helping plants stay hydrated longer. In addition to their practical benefits, they add a decorative touch to borders, flower beds, and areas around trees or shrubs, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your outdoor space.

For optimal results, it's recommended to refresh the bark annually and promptly remove any weeds that appear.

Composition

  • Processing: The raw bark is screened and chipped to create relatively uniform pieces, commonly ranging in size from 10mm to 40mm.
  • Function: They perform multiple roles: suppressing weeds, conserving soil moisture, insulating plant roots from temperature extremes, slowly improving soil structure, and providing a neat, decorative finish.
  • Grade: This product is supplied as Landscaping Grade Bark. (Crucial Safety Note: It is NOT certified to BS EN 1177 standards and therefore should NOT be used as a safety surface in children's play areas. Please purchase specifically certified Play Grade Bark for such applications.)

Applications

  • Mulching Flower Beds & Borders: Optimises weed suppression and moisture retention. Keep the bark slightly away from direct contact with plant stems and crowns.
    • Benefits: Reduces weeding, conserves water, protects roots, improves appearance.
  • Creating Natural Garden Paths: For pathways, apply over firm, level ground. Using path edging helps keep the bark contained. Bark paths provide a soft, natural feel but will compact and require topping up over time.
    • Benefits: Attractive, natural alternative to gravel or paving, softer underfoot.
  • Mulching Around Trees & Shrubs Create a mulch ring around the base extending out towards the drip line - outermost edge of a tree's or shrub's branches and leaves (the extent of its canopy). Ensure bark does not touch the main trunk/stem.
    • Benefits: Retains moisture near roots, suppresses competing weeds, protects trunk from strimmer/mower damage.
  • Low-Maintenance Area Ground Cover: Use to cover bare soil in larger areas where planting is minimal, providing a neat and tidy finish that reduces weed growth.
    • Benefits: Cost-effective coverage, reduces maintenance.

Benefits

  • Weed Control: Acts as a dense barrier over soil, helping to control weeds by preventing their growth and making it harder for new weeds to penetrate.
  • Water Retention: Helps the soil maintain its moisture, reducing the need for frequent watering.
  • Soil Structure Improvement: Breaks down over time and becomes a part of the soil, adding valuable organic matter which improves soil structure.
  • Decorative Appeal: Offers a decorative touch, perfect for ornamental bark-themed gardens.
  • Temperature Regulation: In hot climates, they help protect the soil and plants' roots from excessive heat, while in cold climates, they act as an insulating layer.
  • Economical: Buying bulk bags is cost-effective, especially for larger gardens.
  • Sustainability: Opting for bark over non-organic mulches or compost is a nod towards a more sustainable gardening practice.
