Product Overview

Sawn Treated Timber Batten with a 4800mm length and a 25mm x 50mm cross-section. This pressure-treated softwood timber is specifically cut to provide a versatile, medium-duty solution for creating structural voids and fixing surfaces in both internal and external environments.

The 50mm width offers a generous surface area for securing screws and nails, making it an ideal choice for supporting cladding, shingles, or interior sheet materials where precision alignment is required.

Commonly utilised as a lightweight lath or as a vertical furring strip for timber cladding, this batten is essential for maintaining necessary airflow within a building's structure. This 4.8m length is optimised for commercial-scale cladding and long-span garden buildings, reducing the need for excessive joints and material waste. The profile is specifically engineered for non-load-bearing applications where a reliable, treated fixing point is necessary, while the 25mm x 50mm section.

Features & Benefits

  • Pressure treatment: Impregnated with preservative to extend the service life and provide essential protection against fungal decay and insect attack.
  • Square-cut edges: Consistent sawn profile ensures tight alignment and stable contact surfaces when fixing to walls or rafters.
  • Broad fixing face: The 50mm width provides a larger target for fasteners, reducing the risk of splitting the timber when securing cladding or sheets.
  • Easy workability: Softwood composition allows for rapid cutting, drilling, and fixing using standard hand or power tools.
  • Sawn texture: Provides an excellent key for secondary treatments or adhesives compared to planed-all-round alternatives.
  • Length 4800mm: Maximum stock length designed to span significant distances in roofing and fencing with fewer joins.
  • Section 25mm x 50mm: Broad profile provides a stable fixing surface for versatile use in cladding, fencing, and internal boxing.

Applications

  • Cladding support: Functions as a vertical or horizontal furring strip to provide a secure fixing point and ventilation cavity for timber cladding boards.
  • Lightweight garden roofs: Used to support non-regulated roof coverings such as felt or bituminous corrugated sheets on sheds, stores, and playhouses.
  • Service gaps: Forms essential cavities between the structural wall and internal finishes for the discreet routing of cabling, pipework, and insulation.
  • Fencing trims and detailing: Broad enough to be used as capping rails, decorative trims, and light-duty framing in bespoke fencing projects.
  • DIY and interiors: Practical for creating robust frameworks for boxing-in pipework, supporting shelving, and general household repair work.
  • Ceiling levelling: Applied to uneven joists to create a level plane for the installation of plasterboard or decorative ceiling panels.
  • Garden screening: Acts as the primary horizontal member for constructing contemporary slatted garden screens and privacy panels.

Installation Guidance

  • Set out battens evenly: Use a consistent gauge or spacing, typically 400mm or 600mm, to ensure reliable fixing points and prevent the deformation of the face material.
  • Maintain ventilation gaps: Ensure a continuous airflow path is maintained behind cladding or roofing materials to prevent the accumulation of interstitial condensation.
  • Use corrosion-resistant fixings: Utilise galvanised, sheradised, or stainless steel fasteners to prevent rust staining and maintain structural integrity in treated timber.
  • Apply end-grain preservative: Treat all site-cut ends, notches, and drill holes with a brush-on preservative to maintain the protective envelope of the pressure treatment.
  • Pre-drill near ends: Drill pilot holes when fixing close to the end of the batten to prevent the timber from splitting under the pressure of the fastener.
  • Fix to solid substrates: Ensure battens are secured into structural studs, joists, or masonry using fixings of sufficient length to achieve a minimum 40mm embedment.

Compliance & Performance

  • Preservative treatment (Tanalith ‘E’): Pressure treatment provides resistance against fungal decay and insect attack in accordance with Use Class 2 or 3 applications.
  • Non-structural classification: Suitable only for light-duty and non-load-bearing applications; not to be used for primary floor joists or structural roof rafters.
  • Dimensional tolerance: Finished sizes are sawn and may vary slightly from nominal dimensions due to the drying and treatment process.
  • Natural variation: As a natural product, individual battens may exhibit knots, slight shakes, or resin pockets which do not typically affect performance.
  • Moisture disclaimer: Timber is often stored in outdoor environments; surface moisture does not affect the long-term integrity of the pressure treatment.
  • Important note: Always wear appropriate PPE, including a dust mask and eye protection, when cutting pressure-treated timber to avoid inhalation of treated wood dust.

How delivery works

We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.

Delivery areas

Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.

If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.

What to expect on delivery day

  • Deliveries are typically kerbside.
  • Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
  • Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.

Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery

Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.

Returns

Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.

Questions and Answers

Can 2x1 be used as roof battens?

For roof battens you must use BS 5534 graded battens to meet specific grading and safety standards to be legal. Our graded battens are here: https://materialsmarket.com/products/25mm-x-50mm-bs5534-graded-sawn-treated-roofing-batten-2-x-1-4-8m

answer supplied by James Herbert on 07 January 2026

How far apart should battens be for insulation?

For the best results, you should space battens at 400mm centres. While 600mm is technically possible for some rigid boards, the narrower 400mm spacing provides much better support for the plasterboard and prevents the thin battens from bowing.

answer supplied by James Herbert on 04 September 2024

Is 2x1 batten ok for plasterboard?

yes, 2x1 battens are commonly used for plasterboarding, but they are only suitable for specific scenarios where the wall is already structurally sound.
