What Is A 22mm x 100mm Brown Treated Feather Edge Fence Board?

22mm x 100mm Brown Treated Feather Edge Fence Board, supplied in a 1.8m (1800mm) length, is specifically designed for constructing traditional closeboard fencing. Each softwood board possesses a tapered 'feather edge' profile - a critical design feature that allows the boards to securely overlap when installed vertically onto horizontal fence supports (commonly known as triangular 'arris rails' or flat 'backing rails').

As individual boards, they are ideal for building fences on uneven or sloping ground where standard panels might be difficult to fit. They also allow for easy repairs by replacing individual damaged boards.

To ensure these softwood boards achieve a long service life, they undergo an industrial pressure treatment process. A high-quality brown wood preservative is forced deep into the timber's cellular structure under pressure, providing robust and lasting protection against fungal decay (rot) and damaging insect attacks.

Sizing Explained

  • Nominal Size: 22mm x 100mm
  • Finished Size: 16mm x 94mm

The nominal dimensions of the timber represent the dimensions before the finishing process, while the finished size refers to the actual dimensions of the product post-treatment and planing.

This minor reduction in size is a standard characteristic of timber processing and does not significantly impact the material's application or structural integrity.

Benefits

  • Pressure-Treated Timber: The boards undergo a pressure treatment process designed to enhance resistance to fungal decay, insect attack, and moisture absorption.
  • Feather Edge Profile: Feather edge configuration enhances the board’s wind resistance, increases privacy, and improves overall fence stability when installed vertically on a post framework.
  • Versatility in Application: Suitable for a wide range of applications, including the construction of perimeter fences, boundary walls, and external cladding for structures such as sheds and outbuildings.

Brown Treatment

These boards undergo an advanced pressure treatment process (often referred to as 'tanalisation'). This involves impregnating the timber deep into its cellular structure with high-quality wood preservatives under controlled pressure.

  • Preservative Type: Utilises copper-based preservatives (Tanalith E or similar).
  • Brown Colour: A brown pigment (e.g., Tanatone) is added during treatment, providing an attractive, natural wood appearance that complements garden environments, although this may fade over time to a silvery grey unless maintained.
  • Use Class 3 (UC3): The treatment conforms to Use Class 3 standards, suiting the timber for permanent outdoor use above ground and exposure to the elements (but not for permanent ground contact - hence the need for gravel boards).
  • Long-Term Protection: This industrial treatment provides robust, long-lasting defence against fungal decay (rot) and wood-boring insect attacks, ensuring a significantly extended service life compared to untreated or dip-treated timber.
