Understanding Thistle Bonding Coat

Thistle Bonding Coat is a lightweight gypsum-based undercoat plaster engineered for interior walls and ceilings that lack the natural porosity required for standard backing plasters. Unlike browning or metal lathing plasters, bonding coat is formulated with specific additives that allow it to adhere to smooth, non-absorbent materials without the risk of delamination. This makes it the industry-standard choice for modern construction and renovation where concrete soffits or dense brickwork are present.

The material offers excellent workability and a consistent set time, allowing plasterers to achieve a flat, plumb surface even on irregular backgrounds. Its lightweight nature makes it particularly suitable for overhead applications, reducing fatigue during the levelling of large ceiling areas. Once applied and ruled off, it provides a stable, high-suction surface that is perfectly suited for a finish coat of Thistle Multi-Finish or Board Finish.

Our inventory provides this essential material in standard 25kg bags for small-scale repairs and individual room projects, as well as full pallets containing 56 bags for large-scale residential developments or commercial fit-outs. Both options feature the same high-specification gypsum formula, ensuring consistent performance and coverage across any project size.

Material Range

  • Gypsum Undercoat Plaster: A consistent, high-adhesion basecoat available in individual 25kg bags or bulk pallets of 56 bags for structural levelling on low-suction backgrounds.

Performance Benefits

  • Superior Adhesion: Specifically formulated to bond to smooth or chemically treated surfaces that reject traditional plasters.
  • Workability: A smooth, creamy consistency that is easy to spread and rule off to a flat finish.
  • Controlled Suction: Provides an ideal, even suction rate for the subsequent application of finish plasters.
  • Reliable Setting: Consistent drying profile allows for predictable follow-on times for secondary coats.

Typical Applications

  • Concrete Surfaces: Applying a basecoat directly to pre-cast concrete or smooth-engineered blocks.
  • Renovation Work: Levelling walls where old tiles have been removed or where surfaces have been treated with bonding agents.
  • Ceiling Levelling: Providing a lightweight undercoat for concrete soffits or high-performance plasterboard.
  • Deep Filling: Patching large areas of damaged masonry or uneven substrates prior to final decoration.

Specification & Standards

  • BS EN 13279-1: Gypsum binders and gypsum plasters. Definitions and requirements.
  • BS 8481: Design, preparation and application of internal gypsum, cement, cement and lime plastering systems. Code of practice.
  • Building Regulations Part B: Contribution to fire resistance when used as part of a tested partition or ceiling system.

Related Materials and Construction Uses

Thistle Bonding Coat is frequently used in conjunction with bonding agents such as Betokontakt or PVA primers to further enhance adhesion on exceptionally smooth substrates. It serves as the primary leveling layer before the application of finishing plasters, ensuring a high-quality decorative result. In modern partition systems, it is often applied over expanded metal lathing or beadwork, which provides the necessary edge protection and reinforcement at corners and junctions.

Frequently Asked Thistle Bonding Coat Questions

What Is The Recommended Thickness For Application?

Thistle Bonding Coat is typically applied at 8-11mm thickness on walls and up to 11mm on ceilings. Greater thicknesses may be built up in layers if required, allowing initial stiffening before further application

How Long Does Thistle Bonding Coat Take To Set?

Initial set typically occurs within 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on temperature, background suction, and ventilation. Full drying time varies with thickness and site conditions, and adequate ventilation is required before applying finish plaster.

Does Thistle Bonding Coat Require A Finish Plaster?

Yes, it is designed as a backing plaster and requires a finishing coat such as a gypsum skim plaster. The finish coat should be applied once the undercoat has firmed sufficiently but before it has fully dried.
