When compared to other rigid insulations, 50mm EPS70 Polystyrene Insulation Board is without doubt the most cost effective. The boards comprise of expandable polystyrene beads which are pre-foamed and fused together in a steam-heated mould under pressure.
Despite its light weight composition, EPS70 exhibits consistent thermal performance in an extensive range of building insulation applications such as floor, wall and loft applications.
These boards are the perfect choice for meeting current building regulations and U-value requirements with little to no effort. Not only do they possess high load-bearing capacity (with a whopping compressive strength of 70kPa) but they are also moisture resistant and unaffected by bacteria, moulds and fungi.
50mm EPS is a closed cell insulation board that has been around since the 1950's. EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is made of 98% trapped air and only 2% plastic, making it an efficient insulator with just a small amount of raw material. The lightweight cellular plastic material within EPS consists of small spherical-shaped particles which harbour the trapped air.
It is this microcellular closed cell construction which provides EPS with its impressive compressive strength of 70kPa, endowing it with excellent shock absorbing characteristics. However, despite its compressive strength, EPS70 does not offer much in the way of acoustic performance.
For sound dampening properties, products like the Rockwool RWA45 50mm slab are what you want to be looking at. In terms of thermal conductivity, the boards come in a less effective 0.037W/mK. We suggest if you're after excellent thermal performance, to opt for Phenolic insulation.
With thermal conductivities as low as 0.018 W/mK, this excellent insulating medium offers the best thermal performance of any insulation on the market (even better than PIR insulation).
Whilst EPS doesn't quite top the charts with its soundproofing and thermal performance, it does manage to trump the lot with its exceptional sustainability and environmental credentials. The boards contain no CFC’s or HCFC’s and has Zero Ozone Depletion Potential along with low Global Warming Potential. They are also 100% recyclable at many stages of their life cycle thanks to their biodegradable makeup. One less worry for you and the environment.
50mm EPS70 Polystyrene Insulation Board Applications
The boards are comprised of Expanded Polystyrene, a foam plastic made from solid beads of polystyrene, deeming it high-impact and shock resistant. Because of this, Expanded Polystyrene EPS 70 Board's strength lies in its strength (literally). Its most common applications are below a concrete slab with concrete poured on top or also being used as a walkway board with chipboard laminated to the EPS 70.
It can also be put to use in wall and attic applications, as well as under screeds, in heated floor slabs, below suspended slabs or between joists. EPS's compressive strength also deems it a great choice for a range of different floor applications. Furthermore, EPS boards are compatible with masonry and timber substrates. When applying EPS, we recommend you use a dual fixing method to fix the boards to the substrate. This typically involves applying adhesive to the board and then using fixings to secure the hold.
Insulation Storage & Handling
We’re all about making tough installation jobs easier, which is why we really recommend getting your hands on a hot wire cutter. As the name suggests, it uses heat to melt the insulation, slicing through the boards to provide a perfect cut every time.
If you are not able to get a hold of a hot wire cutter, a simple hand saw or builder's knife will suffice. Thanks to EPS's lightweight composition, the boards are easily carried and installed manually on-site without the need for specialist equipment or skills. It also requires no additional safety gear as the material is non-toxic and chemically inert.
We advise that you store the boards under a cover in dry conditions and handle in well ventilated areas.
