What is 22mm x 150mm Brown Treated Sawn Carcassing Timber (6" x 1") 1800mm?

22mm x 150mm Brown Treated Sawn Carcassing Timber, supplied in a 1800mm length, is a pressure-treated softwood commonly used as a gravel board in fencing systems.

Its primary role is to protect fence panels from direct ground contact - minimising the risk of rot, moisture damage, and insect infestation by creating a durable buffer between the soil and timber fencing.

This Brown Treated Softwood shares many of the same benefits as Green Treated Wood, both being pressure-treated with a copper-based preservative to improve their strength and longevity. However, the primary distinction is in the appearance - Brown Treated Sawn Carcassing Timber is treated with a brown dye, which imparts a deep, warm colour to the wood.

Applications

  • Typically used as a gravel board - forming the critical base layer that separates fence panels from the ground.

Benefits

  • Extended lifespan: Copper-based solution decreases decay.
  • Enhanced Durability: Degradation such as warping and cracking is prevented due to the kiln-drying process.
  • Standardised Sizing: The thickness of the timber makes it versatile, allowing it to be used with various types of fencing, such as feather edge boards or traditional fence panels.

Manufacturing Process

Brown Treated Softwood is similar to Green Treated Wood in that both are pressure-treated with a copper-based preservative to enhance their durability and extend their lifespan.

The key difference lies in the colour - Brown Treated Sawn Carcassing Timber undergoes an additional step in the treatment process where a brown dye is added. This gives the timber a rich, natural brown hue, making it more aesthetically pleasing, especially for outdoor applications where appearance matters.

22mm x 150mm Brown Treated Sawn Carcassing Timber is also kiln-dried to prevent cracking and potential warping. This process removes excess moisture from the wood, ensuring greater stability and reducing the risk of damage over time.

Handling/Storage

The timber should be stored indoors to protect it from environmental factors that could cause damage and affect its performance.
