Product Overview
D49 light-duty welded steel fabric used as reinforcement in cementitious screeds.
Each sheet consists of cold-reduced steel wires, 2.5mm in diameter, resistance welded at 100mm centres to form a square grid pattern.
When laid within screeds, the mesh improves tensile strength and helps control shrinkage cracking during the drying and curing process.
It also minimises curling at edges and joints, ensuring a more stable, durable surface.
Because it is thinner and lighter than heavy-duty reinforcement mesh, D49 is easy to handle and cut to size on site.
It is widely used in residential and light commercial projects, particularly where screed thickness is limited.
Features & Benefits
- Lightweight 2.5mm wire gauge: Easy to handle, cut, and place on site without heavy equipment.
- 100mm × 100mm mesh spacing: Provides uniform stress distribution across the screed.
- Resistance-welded joints: Maintains grid stability under load and prevents displacement.
- Controls shrinkage cracking: Reinforces screed against movement during curing.
- Reduces curling at edges and bays: Keeps screed surfaces level and reduces remedial work.
- Improves tensile and flexural strength: Increases screed performance under load and bending stress.
- Conforms to BS 448: Meets industry standard for welded steel fabric reinforcement.
- Cost-effective reinforcement: Lighter than heavy-duty mesh, making it economical for domestic and light-use floors.
Applications
- Unbonded screeds on membranes: Reinforces screeds separated from the slab with a slip layer, reducing curling and cracking.
- Floating screeds over insulation: Adds strength where screeds are laid on thermal or acoustic insulation layers.
- Bonded screeds on concrete bases: Enhances adhesion and durability where screed is directly bonded to the substrate.
- Small concrete slabs or bays: Helps control shrinkage cracking where joint spacing is limited.
Installation Guidance
- Position mesh at mid-depth of screed layer: Ensures reinforcement is effective in resisting tensile stresses.
- Overlap adjoining sheets by at least 100mm: Maintains continuity of reinforcement across the floor area.
- Use chairs, spacers, or broken tile supports: Prevents mesh from sagging to the base, ensuring correct cover within the screed.
Compliance & Performance
- Manufactured to BS 448 and CARES approved: Verified against UK standards for steel reinforcement products.
- Resistance-welded steel fabric: Provides consistent mechanical properties and quality assurance.
Delivery & Returns Information
Delivery charges vary by product category and order value. Items may ship from different suppliers and arrive separately, so delivery charges can be shown per part of your order at checkout.

How delivery works
We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.
Delivery areas
Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.
If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.
What to expect on delivery day
- Deliveries are typically kerbside.
- Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
- Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.
Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery
Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.
Returns
Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.
