What Is 20kg Kiln Dried Paving Sand?
20kg Kiln Dried Paving Sand is a specially graded, fine silica sand that has been industrially dried to an exceptionally low moisture content. This essential landscaping product is specifically designed for brushing into the narrow joints of block paving and slabs.
Its dry, free-flowing nature ensures complete penetration and filling of joints, which is critical for locking paving units together, preventing lateral movement, enhancing structural stability, and inhibiting weed growth.
Supplied in convenient 20kg bags, it's ready for immediate use on driveways, patios, pathways, and other paved areas.
Applications
Kiln Dried Paving Sand is specifically intended for:
- Jointing Block Paving: Its primary and most critical use is for brushing into the joints of newly laid concrete block pavers or clay paviors on driveways, patios, pathways, and pedestrian areas.
- Re-sanding Existing Paving: Ideal for topping up and replenishing jointing sand that has been lost over time due to weathering, cleaning (e.g., pressure washing), or settlement.
Important Usage Note: This sand is not designed or graded for use as a bedding layer for pavers (which typically requires a coarser, sharp sand) nor is it generally suitable as a component in mortar or concrete mixes unless specified for very particular fine applications.
Benefits
- Optimal Joint Filling & Interlock: The extremely dry, fine, and free-flowing nature allows the sand to penetrate deeply and completely fill even the narrowest joints between paving blocks. This creates a tight interlock, preventing pavers from shifting, rocking, or spreading.
- Enhanced Pavement Stability & Durability: By locking the pavers together, it significantly improves the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of the entire paved surface, making it more resistant to trafficking stresses and preventing loosening over time.
- Effective Weed Inhibition: When joints are tightly packed with kiln dried sand, it creates an inhospitable environment for most weed seeds to germinate and establish from below, reducing weed growth significantly.
- Improved Surface Drainage (Minor): While the primary aim is to fill joints, the sand itself allows for minor water percolation, which can contribute slightly to surface water management compared to impermeable cementitious jointing.
- Consistent Quality & Performance: The kiln drying and precise grading process ensures a uniform, high-quality product free from moisture, organic matter, clumps, or oversized particles that could hinder application or performance.
- Ready & Easy to Use: Supplied in convenient 20kg bags, the sand is ready for immediate application. Its free-flowing nature makes sweeping into joints straightforward.
- Prevents Paver Edge Damage: By stabilising the individual paving units and preventing movement, it helps to reduce chipping (spalling) at the paver edges.
How to Use Kiln Dried Paving Sand
For best results, follow these steps:
- Ensure Dry Conditions: Crucially, both the paving blocks and the sub-base must be completely dry. The sand must also be kept dry. Do not attempt application in damp conditions or if rain is forecast, as moisture will prevent the sand from flowing freely into the joints.
- Prepare Paved Surface: Once pavers are laid and compacted on their bedding layer, ensure the surface is clean and free from debris.
- Spread the Sand: Pour the kiln dried sand generously over the surface of the dry paving.
- Brush into Joints: Using a stiff, clean broom, sweep the sand across the paver surface from multiple directions. Work the sand thoroughly into all the joints until they are completely filled to the top of the block or just below the surface chamfer.
- Compact the Paving (New Installations): For newly laid paving, it is highly recommended to use a vibrating plate compactor (wacker plate with a rubber mat for pavers) over the entire area. This settles the sand deep into the joints, tightens the interlock between pavers, and firms up the entire surface.
- Top Up & Repeat: After initial compaction, more sand will likely be needed as it settles. Repeat the spreading and brushing process until all joints are fully topped up. A second pass with the compactor may be beneficial.
- Final Sweep: Thoroughly sweep off all excess sand from the paver surface. Any sand left on the surface can be abrasive or cause staining.
- Settlement Period: Allow the sand to settle naturally for a few days. Avoid heavy trafficking or washing the area during this time. Some minor initial settlement or loss of sand is normal, especially after the first rainfall; top up as needed.
