What is Everbuild 201 Mortar Admix?
Everbuild 201 Mortar Admix is a highly effective air-entraining liquid plasticising admixture. Its primary function is to introduce a controlled amount of ultra-stable, microscopic air bubbles throughout cement-based mortar mixes.
This process of air entrainment significantly modifies the physical properties of the mortar, making it easier to work with while also boosting its long-term resilience, particularly against harsh weather conditions.
It's designed to improve mortar quality, reduce the reliance on lime, and help standardise performance across different batches of sand and cement.
Applications
Everbuild 201 Mortar Admix is versatile and ideal for a variety of common masonry and plastering applications:
- Load-Bearing Brickwork: Enhancing the quality and durability of mortar for structural brick construction.
- Block Laying: Improving the ease of use and bond for all types of concrete blockwork.
- External Rendering: Creating workable and weather-resistant render coats.
- Internal Plastering: Assisting in achieving smoother, more easily applied plaster finishes (in cement-based systems).
- Pointing & Repointing: Making pointing mortar more plastic and durable for new and remedial work.
Benefits
- Enhanced Workability & Trowelability: The entrained air bubbles act like tiny ball bearings, creating a noticeably smoother, more ‘buttery’ and plastic mortar. This makes it easier to spread, requiring less effort for bedding bricks/blocks, tamping down, and achieving precise alignment.
- Superior Air Retention: Uniquely formulated with a special additive that ensures the entrained air remains stable within the mix for extended periods, even during transportation to the point of use or if there are minor delays on site. This performance surpasses many traditional Vinsol Resin-based plasticisers.
- Improved Freeze-Thaw Resistance: Provides excellent protection for the mortar against the damaging effects of repeated freezing and thawing cycles, tested to be effective down to -2°C in both wet and dry mortar states.
- Reduced Bleeding & Segregation: Creates a more cohesive and stable mortar mix, minimising the separation of water from the cement and sand.
- Lime Replacement Capability: Effectively replaces the need for lime in traditional mortar mixes. This not only simplifies the mix design but also significantly reduces the likelihood of issues like lime bloom or efflorescence appearing on the finished brickwork.
- Increased Consistency: Helps to smooth out variations in workability that can arise from different batches of sand and cement.
- Low Chloride Content: Contains less than 0.1% chloride ions, minimising any potential risk of corrosion to embedded metal components like wall ties.
- BS EN 934-3 Compliant: Meets the requirements of the European standard for air-entraining/plasticising admixtures.
How to Use Everbuild 201 Mortar Admix
Dosage: Add Everbuild 201 Mortar Admix to the gauging water at a rate of 125ml to 250ml per 50kg of cement. The precise amount can be adjusted within this range to achieve the desired level of plasticising and air entrainment for your specific materials and conditions.
Mixing Instructions:
- Always add the admix to the gauging water before mixing with the cement and sand.
- Crucially, reduce the total amount of gauging water normally used in your mix. The plasticising effect of the admix means less water is required to achieve the desired workability.
- One litre of Everbuild 201 added to a 200-litre drum of gauging water will typically be sufficient for gauging approximately four 50kg bags of cement.
- Mix thoroughly to ensure even distribution of the admix.
- While the formulation has safeguards against moderate accidental overdosing (up to double the maximum recommended rate), consistent and accurate dosing is always recommended for best results.
Example Mix Modifications (Replacing Lime):
- A traditional 1:0.25:3 (Cement:Lime:Sand) mix can be modified to a 1:3 (Cement:Sand) mix + Everbuild 201 Mortar Admix.
- A traditional 1:1:6 (Cement:Lime:Sand) mix can be modified to a 1:6 (Cement:Sand) mix + Everbuild 201 Mortar Admix.
Specific Applications:
- Bricklaying/Pointing: Utilise with mortar mix designs suitable for the brick's strength (typically ranging from 1:3 to 1:6 cement:sand).
- Internal Renders (Cement-based): Suitable for mixes such as 1:6 cement:sand + admix.
- External Renders: Recommended for mixes such as 1:3 cement:sand + admix.
Important Considerations & Limitations
- For Mortar Use Only: This product is designed specifically for bricklaying and plastering mortars. Do NOT use in structural concrete.
- Avoid Overdosing: Adhere to the recommended dosage rates for optimal performance.
- No Mixing with Other Additives: Do not mix Everbuild 201 with other admixtures in the same batch of gauging water.
- Lime-Based Mixes: While this product effectively replaces lime in cement-lime-sand mortars (as shown in examples), it should not be used in mixes where lime is the sole or predominant binder (e.g., pure traditional lime mortars without any cement content).
- Storage: Store in original, unopened containers in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight and frost, at temperatures between 5°C and 40°C.
- Shelf Life: Up to 2 years from the date of manufacture when stored correctly.
