What is A Brown Sawn Treated Arris Rail?

A Brown Sawn Treated Arris Rail is a triangular-profile timber used in closeboard and feather edge fencing to provide horizontal support for vertical boards. It is cut from a 75mm x 75mm section of softwood, sawn diagonally to form a right-angled triangle. This profile allows the rail to sit neatly within notched timber posts or be secured using galvanised arris rail brackets, while the sloped face facilitates rainwater runoff and helps minimise moisture retention.

The rough-sawn finish enhances preservative absorption during pressure treatment and offers a better mechanical key for fixings, allowing nails or screws to grip more effectively. Rails are typically installed in pairs or at three heights, depending on the overall fence height, to ensure even load distribution and improve structural stability in exposed or high-wind environments.

The timber is pressure treated with a brown preservative to Use Class 3 standards, making it suitable for external, above-ground applications and providing effective resistance against fungal decay and insect infestation. Brown treatment offers a more aesthetically finished appearance than standard green-treated alternatives, making it a common choice for domestic fencing.

Applications

Brown Sawn Treated Arris Rail is primarily used as a backing support rail in featheredge board fencing. Its common applications include:

  • Featheredge Board Fencing: Horizontal support between fence posts.
  • Agricultural Structures: Building pens and enclosures.
  • Garden Edging: Garden borders and raised beds.
  • Outdoor Furniture: Outdoor seating and tables.

Benefits

  • Structural Support: Provides essential horizontal reinforcement in closeboard and feather edge fencing systems, helping maintain fence stability and alignment.
  • Efficient Water Shedding: Triangular profile allows rainwater to run off easily, reducing the risk of water pooling and timber degradation.
  • Improved Preservative Absorption: Rough-sawn finish increases surface area, allowing for deeper and more effective pressure treatment.
  • Enhanced Fixing Grip: Textured surface improves mechanical bond with nails or screws, reducing the likelihood of fixings loosening over time.
  • Pressure Treated to Use Class 3: Protected against fungal decay and insect attack for long-term performance in external above-ground applications.
  • Aesthetic Finish: Brown treatment offers a more natural and visually consistent appearance than standard green-treated timber.
  • Flexible Installation: Suitable for use with both notched timber posts and galvanised arris rail brackets, allowing for a range of installation methods.
  • Available in Standard Lengths: Supplied in lengths that suit typical bay widths, reducing cutting and on-site waste.
