What Is 8x3 Timber 4.8m?
75mm x 200mm (nominal 8" x 3") C24 Treated Timber, supplied in 4.8m lengths, is a softwood carcassing timber engineered for demanding structural applications where strength is critical.
It begins as sawn timber which is then kiln-dried to enhance its dimensional stability. It is then regularised - planed on all faces - to achieve a consistent and precise finished size (typically around 72mm x 195mm) and features "easi-edge" rounded corners for safer and more comfortable handling.
Each length undergoes a comprehensive pressure treatment, which deeply impregnates the wood with preservatives. This process provides robust, long-lasting protection against rot, fungal decay, and insect attack.
Its C24 strength grading signifies superior structural properties in terms of bending strength, stiffness, and density compared to lower grades like C16. This makes 8x3 Timber 4.8m the preferred choice for constructing essential load-bearing elements such as floor joists, roof rafters, and key components in timber frame structures.
Finished Size vs. Nominal Size: The actual finished size of this timber is approximately 72mm x 195mm, slightly smaller than its nominal 75mm x 200mm sawn size, due to the regularising/planing process. All calculations and construction should be based on this finished size.
8x3 Timber 4.8m Sizing Explained
These 8x3 timber 4.8m lengths have been planed all round to produce a smooth easi edge that allows for comfortable handling. Despite a nominal size of 75mm x 200mm, their actual finished size is 72mm x 195mm.
Please Note: The finished size of our carcassing timber may vary slightly from the nominal dimensions. You can expect to receive timber that is finished with a thickness 3mm less and a width 5mm less than the nominal measurements stated. Colour and finish are representative only and may vary slightly as this is a natural product.
Applications
- Floor Joists: Ideal for constructing strong and reliable domestic and some commercial flooring systems.
- Roof Rafters, Purlins, and Ridge Beams: Commonly used for forming the primary structural members of pitched roofs, providing essential support for roof coverings.
- Timber Frame Wall Studs: Suitable for load-bearing wall construction in timber-framed buildings, where its strength can accommodate higher loads or wider stud spacing (as per design).
- Flat Roof Joists: Provides a strong framework for flat roof constructions.
- Decking Subframes: Can be used to build heavy-duty, durable subframes for garden decking, especially where larger spans or robust support is needed (ensure treatment Use Class is used if in direct ground contact or very close proximity).
- General Structural Framing: Larger garden building frames or specific load-bearing components.
Benefits
- High Structural Strength (C24 Grade): Reliable strength, stiffness, and density characteristic of C24 grade - ideal for demanding load-bearing structural applications.
- Pressure Treated: Long-lasting resistance to fungal decay and insect attack.
- Dimensional Stability: Being kiln-dried, this timber is less prone to movement post-installation compared to unseasoned wood.
- Safer, Easier Handling: "Easi edge" profile with rounded corners improves handling comfort and reduces the risk of splinters.
- Versatile Structural Use: Suitable for a wide range of structural tasks.
