What is 50mm Scrim Tape?

50mm Scrim Tape is a reinforcing tape made from a woven fibreglass mesh. It features an open weave construction and is coated on one side with a pressure-sensitive adhesive, allowing for quick and easy application directly onto plasterboard (drywall) surfaces.

The 50mm (approximately 2 inches) width is ideal for covering standard plasterboard joints, and the generous 90-metre roll length provides ample material for most common projects.

Its primary purpose is to add tensile strength across the vulnerable butt joints or tapered edges of plasterboard sheets. By doing so, it helps to prevent cracks from forming in the finished plaster or jointing compound layer, which can occur due to minor building movements, shrinkage, or flexing.

Applications

  • Reinforcing Plasterboard Joints: Its primary use is for taping the joints between tapered edge or square edge plasterboard sheets on walls and ceilings before the application of jointing compound or a skim coat of plaster.
  • Repairing Minor Cracks: Suitable for repairing small cracks in existing plaster walls and ceilings by providing reinforcement before filling and refinishing.
  • Strengthening Internal Corners: Can be used to reinforce internal corners of plasterboard constructions, although purpose-made paper-faced metal beads or flexible corner tapes are also common for this application.
  • Patching Small Holes: Can be used around the perimeter of small plasterboard patches to reinforce the edges before feathering out with jointing compound.

Benefits

  • Crack Prevention: Significantly strengthens plasterboard joints, distributing stress and minimising the risk of cracks appearing in the final surface.
  • High Tensile Strength: Fibreglass mesh construction offers excellent inherent strength, resisting stretching, tearing, and distortion.
  • Self-Adhesive Backing: Allows for fast and easy application directly to the plasterboard surface without the need for an initial bedding coat of jointing compound just to hold the tape. This speeds up the initial taping process.
  • Open Mesh Design: The open weave allows jointing compound or plaster to penetrate through the tape, creating a strong, monolithic bond between the boards, tape, and compound for superior joint strength.
  • Dimensionally Stable: Does not shrink, stretch, bubble, or blister when subjected to changes in temperature or humidity, or during the drying process of jointing compounds/plaster.
  • Thin Profile: Its slim construction allows it to be easily covered with jointing compound, resulting in a smooth, flat, and seamless finish that is unnoticeable once decorated.
  • Ease of Use: Simple to cut to the desired length with a sharp knife or snips, easy to position, and adheres readily to the board surface.

Storage

  • Store rolls of scrim tape in a cool, dry place.
  • It is advisable to keep them in their original packaging until use to protect them from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight, which could affect the adhesive properties over time.
