What is 25mm x 50mm BS5534 Graded Sawn Treated Roofing Batten?

25mm x 50mm BS5534 Graded Sawn Treated Roofing Battens are specifically designed and manufactured to provide a secure and reliable fixing base for roof tiles and slates.

Adhering to the stringent requirements of BS 5534, these battens undergo rigorous grading. This process assesses factors like timber species, knot size and frequency, slope of grain, and absence of decay.

This ensures each batten possesses the necessary structural strength to support the considerable dead load (weight) of materials like concrete tiles, clay tiles, natural slates, or fibre-cement slates distributed across the span between roof rafters.

Our 25mm x 50mm BS5534 battens are pressure treated for durability and clearly marked for easy identification and quality assurance on site.

Applications

  • Primary Use: Graded specifically to BS 5534 is for use in pitched roofing.
  • Fixing Method: They are fixed horizontally across the slope.
  • Support Structure: They are attached either directly onto the roof rafters/trusses or onto counter-battens (which run vertically up the rafters) depending on the roof construction type (e.g., if ventilation under the battens is required).
  • Function: Their essential function is to provide secure, correctly spaced fixing points (usually for nailing, sometimes clipping) for the roof covering.
  • Materials Supported: Concrete tiles, clay tiles, natural slates, and fibre-cement slates are precisely the types of roof coverings these battens are designed to support.

Benefits

  • BS 5534 Compliant: Meets the mandatory UK standard for roofing applications.
  • Structural Safety: Graded for strength to securely support roof coverings and resist wind loads.
  • Durable & Long-Lasting: Pressure treatment provides essential protection against rot and insect attack within the roof structure.
  • Reliable Fixing Base: Provides the required secure anchorage for tiles and slates.
  • Dimensional Consistency: Manufactured within strict tolerances for a uniform tiling surface.
  • Essential for Compliance: Meets requirements for Building Regulations approval and NHBC (or similar) warranties.
  • Peace of Mind: Using compliant battens avoids costly remedial work and ensures roof safety and longevity.
