What Is Unilin Xtratherm 165mm?
165mm Xtratherm Thin-R PIR Insulation is a high-performance foil faced Polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation board highly regarded for its thermal performance and versatile nature. Clad on either side by a gas-tight low emissivity aluminium layer, the board comprises an environment friendly, CFC-free polyisocyanurate (PIR) core.
165mm Xtratherm Insulation boards have a certified thermal conductivity value of just 0.022 W/mK, knocking other insulations (such as EPS, XPS and mineral wool) out of the park in terms of thermal performance. These 80mm boards can be cut to fit in between stud work, laid under a screed floor, or installed between rafters in a pitched roof, making them among the most commonly used insulation products on the market.
Xtratherm Thin R XT boards are popular among contractors and installers, as they feature similar performance capabilities to the likes of Kingspan, at a fraction of the cost.
The closed-cell structure and gas-tight facings of the board provide excellent thermal performance and moisture resistance. This resilience to moisture and water vapour minimises the risk of condensation and dampness occurring, which in turn, helps the boards resist mould, fungi, bacteria and microbial growth - making it evermore durable and reliable as a thermal insulation solution. The product features a thermal conductivity of 0.022W/mK and (despite its slim form) packs an equally impressive compressive strength of 140kPa. One way in which Thin-R Pitched Xtratherm lives up to its 'thin' reputation, however, is by providing maximum thermal performance with minimal intrusion of valuable living space.
In addition to this, the boards also get a big green tick in the 'environmentally-conscious' checkbox as they are manufactured from rigid polyisocyanurate (PIR) using a blowing agent that has zero ozone depletion potential (zero ODP) and low global warming potential (GWP).
165mm Xtratherm PIR Insulation Board Applications
Xtratherm Thin-R Rigid Insulation Board is a multi-application product designed for roofs, walls, floors, timber and steel framed systems. These 100mm boards can be cut to fit in between stud work, laid under a screed floor, or installed between rafters in a pitched roof.
Give or take, around a quarter of heat is lost through the roof in an uninsulated home. Warm Roof construction is a particularly effective way of insulating complex roofs (and sloped roofs). Just like you pop a beanie on in the winter to prevent heat from escaping through the top of your head, the same kind of theory applies to your house. Using Xtratherm Thin-R XT will reduce heat loss while also delivering excellent thermal bridging detailing. Insulating above and between the roof timbers ensures that the structure is kept at a temperature close to that of the inside of the building (maintaining internal environmental conditions), reducing thermal stress and condensation risk.
For cavity wall applications, we recommend CavityTherm from the Xtratherm range: an innovative built-in insulation solution for traditional walls that achieves passive level U-Values as low as 0.12 W/m2K with excellent protection against thermal bridging. In all builds, we advise that you ensure tight fitting of the insulation boards to achieve continuity of insulation.
Xtratherm PIR Insulation Board Storage & Handling
The polythene wrapping in which the boards are supplied is not considered adequate protection for outside exposure. Care should be taken to protect the insulation in storage and during the build process. To keep them in the best nick, we advise that you store the boards indoors on a level surface and under a protective cover.
The insulation boards can be readily cut using a sharp knife or fine-toothed saw.
