What Is Knauf Fill and Finish 60?

Knauf Fill & Finish 60 is a UK-manufactured, off-white, gypsum-based joint filler supplied in moisture-protected 10kg paper sacks.

When mixed with 6.8L of clean, cold water it forms a smooth paste that remains workable for approximately 60 minutes, hardens in around two hours, and yields an estimated coverage of 45m² per bag - enough for a full Q2 finish on standard plasterboard joints (see below section for more information on this).

Designed exclusively for interior spaces and hand application, this versatile compound expertly beds jointing tapes and beads. It also provides the necessary subsequent build and finishing coats, doubling efficiently as a rapid patching medium.

Once set, it sands with ease; for optimal results, use 150-180 grit paper, though anything from 120 grit upwards will achieve an acceptable finish. This process creates a consistently smooth surface, perfectly prepared for a coat of Knauf Wallboard Primer or Plasterboard Sealer prior to final decoration.

Each bag is fitted with an inner plastic liner to guard against ambient moisture, and empty packaging can be disposed of in accordance with local regulations.

Q2 Finish (Standard Finishing)

  • Purpose: Q2 is considered the basic or standard requirement for finishing walls and ceilings. Its main objective is to align the joint area seamlessly with a continuous transition to the board surface. This means the joint should no longer appear as a distinct recess or hump but should flow smoothly into the surrounding plasterboard.
  • Process: It builds upon Q1 (which involves embedding the joint tape and filling screw heads). For Q2, an additional, wider coat of joint compound is applied over the Q1 layer, feathered out to create that smooth, continuous transition. Sanding is typically required to achieve the desired smoothness.
  • Suitability: A Q2 finish is typically suitable as a base for:
    • Medium to coarse textured wallpapers.
    • Matt emulsion paints or paints with some filler, often applied with standard paint rollers.
    • Decorative topcoats with a particle size greater than 1mm.

Application

Knauf Fill & Finish 60 is specifically formulated for internal applications involving gypsum boards:

  • Jointing Gypsum Plasterboard: Its primary use is for the bedding of joint tapes and the application of finishing coats on all types of plasterboard joints (tapered and butt joints), ensuring a seamless surface.
  • Bedding Joint Tapes: Provides a strong and reliable base for embedding paper joint tapes, forming a robust bond that resists cracking.
  • Finishing Joints: Creates the smooth, final layers over joints, feathering out imperfections to prepare the surface for decoration.
  • Bedding Beads: Ideal for bedding corner beads and stop beads, ensuring they are securely fixed and seamlessly integrated into the plasterboard surface.
  • Patching and Repair: An excellent solution for quickly filling small holes, cracks, or damaged areas on existing plasterboard walls and ceilings due to its fast setting time and smooth finish.

Benefits

  • Rapid Setting Time (60-Minute Working Window): Once mixed, the compound remains workable for approximately 60 minutes, providing ample time for application and initial shaping before it sets quickly.
  • Dual-Purpose Versatility: Engineered for use in multiple stages of the jointing process - it is suitable for both bedding joint tapes and beads, and for applying the finishing coats. This eliminates the need for multiple different products, streamlining your material management.
  • Smooth Finish, Easy Sanding: The compound is formulated to dry to a very smooth texture, making it exceptionally easy to sand. Knauf recommends using 150/180 grit sandpaper to achieve optimal, blemish-free results, ensuring a surface perfectly prepared for painting or wallpapering.
  • Hand Application Only: Due to its accelerated setting properties, this compound is specifically designed and optimised for hand application.
  • Impressive Coverage: A single 10kg bag of Knauf Fill & Finish 60 provides an estimated coverage of 45m², making it an economical choice for both small repairs and larger installations.
  • Reliable Shelf Life: Boasts a practical 9-month shelf life when stored correctly, minimising product waste and allowing for flexible project planning.
  • Multi-Use for Repairs: Beyond jointing, its fast-setting nature and smooth finish make it highly effective for patching and repair jobs on existing plasterboard surfaces, quickly mending holes or imperfections.
  • Premium Gypsum-Based Formulation: As a gypsum-based product, it is compatible with plasterboard and provides a strong, durable, and stable finish.
  • Off-White Colour: Dries to a consistent off-white colour, providing a neutral base for subsequent decoration.

Storage, Handling, and Disposal

  • Storage: Store in a dry area, away from direct sunlight, frost, and high temperatures. An ambient temperature above 5°C is recommended for storage and application to ensure optimal performance.
  • Packaging: Supplied in a durable paper sack with an inner plastic layer for added protection against moisture.
  • Shelf Life: Designed to maintain its integrity for up to 9 months from the date of manufacture when stored in recommended conditions.
  • Disposal: Dispose of product contents and empty containers in accordance with local waste regulations. Consult licensed collectors' sorting instructions for recycling or disposal.

How delivery works

We work with a nationwide network of trusted suppliers. Items in your basket may be supplied by different suppliers and delivered separately. Where this applies, you will see delivery charges shown at checkout for each part of your order. We always aim to group products from the same supplier to keep delivery costs as low as possible.

Delivery areas

Delivery charges apply to mainland UK, excluding: AB, CA, CF, DD, DG, EH, EX, FK, KA, KW, KY, IV, LA, LD, LL, ML, NP, PA, PH, PL, SA, SY, TR, TQ and TD.

If your address is in one of these areas, we will contact you before processing your order to confirm any additional costs. We do not currently offer delivery outside the UK mainland.

What to expect on delivery day

  • Deliveries are typically kerbside.
  • Please ensure someone is on-site to accept delivery. For heavier items, help with offloading may be required.
  • Many building materials arrive on large vehicles. If access is restricted, a specialist vehicle such as a HIAB may be required and could incur an additional charge.

Why delivery can cost more than typical parcel delivery

Building materials often travel on larger vehicles and usually carry fewer drops per run than parcel networks. That is why delivery charges can be higher than standard e-commerce shipping.

Returns

Returns depend on what you have bought and whether there is anything wrong with it. For full details on eligibility, timeframes, and exclusions, please see our full policy.
