What is Bostik General Purpose Mortar?

Bostik General Purpose Mortar is a high-quality, grey-coloured powder composed of cement and graded sand. Its simple mix-in-the-tub design means you can quickly prepare the exact amount of mortar needed, reducing waste and mess for a range of installation, repair, and general maintenance tasks on masonry.

Ideal for smaller-scale projects, Bostik General Purpose Mortar excels in applications such as laying bricks and blocks, patching and pointing existing masonry, and handling general masonry repairs. Its convenience also makes it well-suited for a variety of minor installation and ongoing maintenance tasks on both interior and exterior surfaces.

Applications

  • Brick and Block Laying: Effective for smaller-scale projects involving the laying of bricks, blocks, and other masonry units.
  • Patching and Pointing: Ideal for repairing damaged mortar joints, filling cracks, and repointing existing brickwork or stonework to restore integrity and appearance.
  • General Masonry Repairs: Suitable for a variety of minor repairs to masonry surfaces, helping to maintain structural soundness and aesthetics.
  • Installation & Maintenance Projects: A reliable choice for various small installation tasks and ongoing maintenance work around properties.

Benefits

  • Ultimate Convenience: Arrives as a pre-mixed blend of cement and sand, eliminating the need for sourcing and measuring individual components.
  • Versatile Applications: Suitable for a wide array of tasks, from new constructions like laying bricks and blocks to essential repairs such as patching and pointing.
  • Interior & Exterior Use: Formulated to perform effectively in both internal and external environments.
  • Consistent Performance: Provides a reliable, cement-based mix, ensuring dependable results when prepared and applied as directed.
  • Controlled Mixing: Allows for fresh mortar to be mixed in manageable quantities, ensuring optimal workability for the task at hand.
  • Practical Packaging: Available in a user-friendly bucket size (5kg), making it easy to handle and store.

Application Guidelines

Surface Preparation:

  • Ensure all surfaces are clean, sound, and free from dust, grease, or any loose material.
  • Thoroughly dampen porous surfaces before application to prevent rapid moisture loss from the mortar, but avoid standing water.

Mixing:

  • Gradually add 100ml to 150ml of clean, cold water to each 1kg of Bostik General Purpose Mortar powder directly in the tub (or a suitable mixing vessel).
  • Mix thoroughly by hand or with a suitable mechanical mixer until a smooth, consistent, and workable paste is achieved.
  • Do not add excessive water, as this will weaken the mortar. Only mix as much mortar as can be used within the 1-hour working time.

Application:

  • Apply the mixed mortar using appropriate tools (e.g., trowel, pointing hawk) according to standard masonry practices for the specific task (bricklaying, pointing, patching).
  • Ensure the mortar is applied within its working time and within the recommended application temperature range of +5°C to +25°C.

Cleaning:

  • Clean tools and equipment with warm soapy water immediately after use, before the mortar sets.
