Understanding Slate Chippings

Slate Chippings are a versatile landscaping aggregate valued for their distinctive flat, angular shape and rich colouration. Unlike rounded gravels, slate tends to lay flatter, providing better coverage and a more stable surface for foot traffic and decorative borders. This material is naturally inert and pH neutral, ensuring it is safe for use around plants and in aquatic environments such as ponds or water features, where it darkens beautifully when wet.

The range includes two primary colourways: Plum, which offers deep earthy tones, and Blue, providing a cool, contemporary aesthetic. These are available in 20mm and 40mm grades to suit different functional requirements. The 20mm chippings are frequently selected for paths and as a mulch for planters, as they pack together more tightly. In contrast, the 40mm grade is preferred for larger borders and rockeries where a more textured, chunkier appearance is desired.

To accommodate projects of all scales, these materials are supplied in both 20kg poly bags for easy handling and small-area touch-ups, and 800kg bulk bags for large-scale landscaping and commercial groundworks. Because slate is a natural product, it is resistant to fading and provides an excellent weed-suppressant layer when installed over a suitable membrane.

Material Range

  • Plum Slate: Decorative chippings in deep purple tones, available in 20mm and 40mm grades for borders and garden features.
  • Blue Slate: Natural blue-grey aggregate in 20mm and 40mm sizes, providing a clean finish for contemporary landscaping and pathways.
  • Bulk and Retail Packaging: All slate varieties are available in 20kg small bags and 800kg bulk bags to suit varying project volumes.

Performance Benefits

  • Colour Retention: Natural stone composition ensures the vibrant plum and blue hues do not fade under UV exposure.
  • Drainage Support: The angular shape allows water to permeate freely, reducing surface runoff and aiding soil moisture retention.
  • Sustainability: Often produced as a by-product of slate roofing production, making it an environmentally conscious landscaping choice.
  • Weed Suppression: When laid at the correct depth, the chippings create a heavy barrier that inhibits weed growth.

Typical Applications

  • Garden Borders: Providing a low-maintenance, decorative mulch for flower beds and shrubberies.
  • Pathways: Creating stable, flat-surface walking tracks in residential and public gardens.
  • Water Features: Enhancing the appearance of ponds, streams, and fountains with fish-friendly natural stone.
  • Driveway Perimeters: Used as a decorative edge or infill for areas not subject to heavy vehicular turning.

Specification & Standards

  • BS EN 12620: Aggregates for concrete (relevant for mineral purity and durability standards).
  • BS 7533-3: Pavements constructed with clay, natural stone or concrete pavers.
  • The SuDS Manual (C753): Guidance on using aggregates as part of Sustainable Drainage Systems.

Related Materials and Construction Uses

Slate Chippings are most effective when installed over a high-quality geotextile weed membrane, which prevents the stone from mixing with the underlying soil while allowing water to drain. They are often used alongside timber sleepers or stone edgings to create defined perimeters and keep the aggregate contained. For pathways, a compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1 may be required under the membrane to provide a firm foundation before the decorative slate layer is applied.

Frequently Asked Slate Chippings Questions

What Is The Difference Between 20mm And 40mm Slate Chippings?

20mm slate chippings are typically used for pathways, borders, and lighter decorative coverage, providing a flatter finish. 40mm slate chippings offer greater visual impact and are often selected for larger landscaped areas and improved surface stability.

Do Slate Chippings Require A Membrane?

A geotextile membrane beneath slate chippings helps reduce weed growth and prevents aggregate migration into the subsoil. For decorative beds and borders, membrane installation improves long-term surface stability and maintenance control.

Can Slate Chippings Be Used For Drainage?

Slate chippings can assist surface water dispersal in landscaping applications. While not a replacement for engineered drainage media, the angular structure promotes permeability when installed over free-draining substrates.
