Understanding Slate Chippings

Slate Chippings are a versatile landscaping aggregate valued for their distinctive flat, angular shape and rich colouration. Unlike rounded gravels, slate tends to lay flatter, providing better coverage and a more stable surface for foot traffic and decorative borders. This material is naturally inert and pH neutral, ensuring it is safe for use around plants and in aquatic environments such as ponds or water features, where it darkens beautifully when wet.

The range includes two primary colourways: Plum, which offers deep earthy tones, and Blue, providing a cool, contemporary aesthetic. These are available in 20mm and 40mm grades to suit different functional requirements. The 20mm chippings are frequently selected for paths and as a mulch for planters, as they pack together more tightly. In contrast, the 40mm grade is preferred for larger borders and rockeries where a more textured, chunkier appearance is desired.

To accommodate projects of all scales, these materials are supplied in both 20kg poly bags for easy handling and small-area touch-ups, and 800kg bulk bags for large-scale landscaping and commercial groundworks. Because slate is a natural product, it is resistant to fading and provides an excellent weed-suppressant layer when installed over a suitable membrane.

Related Materials and Construction Uses

Slate Chippings are most effective when installed over a high-quality geotextile weed membrane, which prevents the stone from mixing with the underlying soil while allowing water to drain. They are often used alongside timber sleepers or stone edgings to create defined perimeters and keep the aggregate contained. For pathways, a compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1 may be required under the membrane to provide a firm foundation before the decorative slate layer is applied.
