What Is Sharp Sand?
Sharp sand, often referred to as concrete sand or grit sand, has a gritty texture with lots of large grains that make it perfect for a range of construction tasks.
Each grain of sand ranges anywhere from 0 to 4mm in diameter; this large grain size and angular nature of sharp sand render it ideal for drainage on lawns and in landscaping projects.
Each sharp sand bulk bag contains approximately 800kg of grit sand. In general building projects, coarse sand is a suitable aggregate for block paving and patios. Often mixed with cement and water to create concrete, sharp sand makes for an excellent stiff mortar mix.
However, you might need more than one sharp sand bulk bag for mixing (possibly a second bag or three), as concrete is comprised of three parts aggregate material and one part cement.
Please note: As the sand is sourced from seabeds, moisture can affect the mass of each bag. Weight may vary by as much as 5% either way.
For all other sand and aggregate products, please refer to our Sand & Aggregates homepage.

- Multi-functional - both decorative (with consistent colour) and functional
- Ideal for general building and landscaping projects alike

Sharp Sand Weight
Our excellent sharp sand bulk bag contains approximately 800kg of sharp aggregate materials.
The sand is put through as few manufacturing processes as possible to ensure our customers get the raw, natural benefits. However, this also means that there might be some excess moisture in our sharp sand bulk bags.
Because of this, customers should expect the weight of our bulk bags to fluctuate by 5% on either side. This is an important consideration for small teams who need to be prepared to manoeuvre heavy weights around their construction site with specific equipment.
Putting together a new project list? Check our Building Materials online for further details on all of the quality sheet materials, fine builder's sand/building sand (which promises a smooth finish) and related products we stock at a good price.
Sharp Sand Safety Considerations
Sand and Gravel is a mineral compound that contains quartz with varying amounts of crystalline silica.
While natural sand is not harmful, it can produce dust particles that may contain respirable crystalline silica due to natural or mechanical forces acting on it.
Respirable silica may be present in small amounts in all naturally-occurring silica sands.
Repeatedly inhaling respirable crystalline silica (quartz) can cause a condition called silicosis. It is important to note that even temporary exposure to silica dust in the eyes can cause irritation.
It's also important when handling this product to remember that sand is simply minuscule shards of glass, as hinted by the 'sharp' in its name.
When utilising sharp sand in any given project, it is important to be aware of the following potential risks:
- Causes skin irritation
- Causes serious eye irritation
- Obtain special instructions before use
- Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection
