What Is 18mm MDF?
18mm Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) board is an exceptional choice for woodworking and construction enthusiasts seeking a versatile and durable material for their projects.
This defect-free composite board can be utilised in various applications and is easily cut, screwed and glued.
Crafted with precision, this MDF board boasts a consistent thickness of 18mm, ensuring reliability and accuracy in every application.
Its remarkable durability stems from the fusion of high-density wood fibres and a resilient resin binder, rendering it resistant to warping, cracking, and splitting over time.
Its smooth sanded surface serves as a perfect canvas for various finishing techniques, from painting and veneering to laminating. This same surface renders it perfect for internal applications with an aesthetic consideration, such as shelving and furniture making.
Where Is 18mm MDF Used?
MDF Board can be used for everything from furniture to flooring, with its primary use lying in carpentry and furniture building.
Due to its inability to handle moisture, Standard MDF is purposed for interior use in dry conditions only.
However, we do sell a moisture-resistant MDF that is designed to hold up in areas of high humidity such as the bathroom or kitchen, should you need something more geared towards exterior applications.
In short, standard MDF is an ideal sheet material for non-structural internal use in the majority of domestic and internal applications.

18mm MDF Board Finishing
There are a few options when it comes to finishes for your MDF board.:
- You could go with a clear finish, like lacquer or varnish - this will protect the MDF and give it a nice shine.
- You could also go with a stain or paint - stain will give the MDF a nice colour, while paint will provide a more solid block colour.
- If you want to get really fancy, you could even go with a veneer finish - this is a thin layer of wood that is applied to the MDF. Veneer can be stained or painted, and it gives the MDF a nice, natural look.
Painting 18mm MDF
The best way to paint MDF is to first coat it in a solvent-based primer of your choice, as this will help the paint adhere to the surface. Once this is done, you can then add the paint - easy.
Whichever finish you choose, make sure to apply it evenly and in thin coats. Now that you know what finishes can be used on MDF, get out there and start building!
18mm MDF Board Cutting
One thing that's important to note is that cutting MDF creates dust which can be harmful if inhaled.
Therefore, when cutting MDF with electric saws we recommend you have the safety hazards covered before cracking on; such as using dust extractors and donning the appropriate safety gear such as dust masks, and respiratory and eye protection.
No matter the tool, avoid cutting in confined spaces and ensure you're always working in a well-ventilated area.
How is 18mm MDF Made?
The manufacturing process for MDF (short for Medium Density Fibreboard) sees wood fibres combined with resins and waxes cooked to a high temperature and pressed under high pressure to form sturdy uniform panels.
This process eliminates knots, air pockets, and grain issues from the MDF boards, ensuring a uniform, defect-free precision finish.
