What Is 18mm Marine Plywood?

Where strength and moisture resistance is key, rely on 18mm Marine Plywood.

This robust structural sheet is second to none when it comes to resisting water damage, crowning it the most popular plywood solution for boatbuilding.

At its core (which is highly moisture-resistant, might we add), Marine Plywood is a premium load-bearing sheet material that is designed with resilience in mind.

So-called because of its use as a popular ship-building product, Marine Plywood is also suitable for a wide range of construction applications where rigidity and stability are essential such as flooring, roofing and wall applications.

Unlike regular plywood, Marine Plywood sheets are made with waterproof glue and are much less likely to swell or delaminate when exposed to moisture.

Unlike general moisture resistant engineered wood sheets such as moisture-resistant MDF, Marine plywood is purposed to be immersed in water with little to no effect on its performance.

For applications that require a slight degree of moisture resistance, consider using moisture resistant MDF.

Marine Plywood is made from solid veneer wood, meaning the finished surface gives a wooden appearance. Therefore, images may vary slightly from delivered products due to the natural variation in colour and grain.

18mm Marine Grade Plywood Applications

For impeccable moisture resistance in a wide range of interior applications and exterior applications (such as flooring, roofing, wall, general joinery and external joinery), count on 18mm Marine  Plywood.

This exceptional product is built to last, offering unfaltering performance in damp weather conditions. Whilst naturally resistant to moisture, you can easily increase service life of Marine Plywood by sealing both the edges and faces of the sheets.

Fit for structural use in a properly protected specification (without compromising the performance of the overall system), this particular plywood is purposed for structural use and conforms to BS1088 (the British standard specification for Marine Plywood). This assures that it is manufactured from durable Meranti hardwood veneers.

This stamp of approval ensures that the product will perform well in almost any environment.
However, it can also be used in the following applications:

  • Shop fitting
  • Storage boxes
  • Bathrooms
  • Sheds
  • Walkways
  • Kitchens
  • Patios
  • Indoor vehicle storage areas
  • Roof supports
  • Cold frames

If used for an aesthetic application such as shelving, we suggest sanding and adding a layer of varnish to enhance its overall appearance.

18mm Marine Plywood Key Features:

Offering many benefits, 18mm Marine Grade Plywood utilises only highly durable species of timber to resist decaying in water-based applications.

This structural makeup is what makes Marine Plywood a prize-winner in the eyes of boat building industries and marine insurers, as it boasts unbeatable weatherproofing and maintains its structural integrity in wet conditions over extended periods.

Let's take a look at the specs below:

  • Moisture resistant - retains its integrity when in contact with water
  • Suitable for flooring, roofing and wall applications
  • Holds laminate, paint and polish well
  • Pliable design - can bend without cracking or comprising structural integrity
  • Offers superior impact resistance
  • Lack of voids and holes makes the product more structurally sound

18mm Marine Grade Plywood Size

Marine Plywood 18mm comes in a 2440mm x 1220mm x 18mm sheet, giving a square metre size of roughly 2.98m2.

18mm Marine Plywood Manufacturing Process

Where standard plywood sheets are generally made up of layers of softwood and hardwood, Marine Ply is manufactured using many layers of water-resistant tropical hardwood that are bonded together with waterproof glue.

Unlike standard plywood, Marine Plywood is free of air pockets and core voids, reducing the likelihood of water getting trapped between the layers.

If you were to slice through a sheet of regular plywood, you'd be able to spot holes and voids within the layers.

In avoiding these holes, Marine Plywood boasts greater structural integrity and rot-resistant qualities, making it suitable for demanding requirements where the board is likely to be exposed to the elements.

Both the quality and lay-up of the sheet's veneers render Marine Plywood an extremely robust and resilient product.

How To Cut Marine Plywood

Despite its strength, cutting Marine Plywood is anything but difficult. Simply cut it to size with a jigsaw and cut along the grain lines to achieve a smoother cut.
