What Is 18mm OSB3 Tongue and Groove?

In environments where most interior laminate sheet materials would falter, 18mm OSB3 Tongue and Groove (T&G) demonstrates superior performance and resilience.

18mm OSB T&G board – also known as sterling board – is an extremely versatile engineered wood sheet material.

Specifically engineered for use in humid conditions, OSB T&G 18mm lives up to its name by comprising 'oriented strands' - a composition of wood fibres and adhesives compressed in opposing orientations to create a panel with exceptional load-bearing capabilities.

OSB T&G 18mm exhibits performance characteristics similar to those of softwood plywood building materials, including comparable flexibility and strength.

A notable attribute of OSB T&G 18mm is its durable tongue and groove profile. Precision-engineered edges allow the boards to interlock seamlessly, ensuring a perfect alignment with adjacent panels.

This design feature renders 18mm OSB T&G particularly suitable for use in platform floors, load-bearing roofs, flooring, wall applications, and ceilings.

Furthermore, the inherent water resistance of 18mm OSB T&G makes it an excellent choice for use in areas prone to humidity.

Where Is 18mm OSB T&G Flooring Board Used?

Precision engineered for use in a majority of load-bearing applications, contractors rely on 18mm OSB T&G as a premium roofing and flooring panel. It can also be used as sheathing materials on walls, floors and ceilings.

We recommend using 18mm OSB T&G for structural use in the following applications:

  • Wall sheathing
  • Roofing and flooring applications
  • Signboards
  • Furniture and concealment applications

OSB T&G 18mm Flooring Board Key Features

  • Relatively easily sealed against the elements - suitable for interior or exterior structural applications
  • Precision engineered tongued and grooved board
  • Edges machined to the finest tolerance for a snug and secure fit
  • A reliable structural panel for house building and structural roofing
  • Suitable for humid conditions - (Service Class 1 & 2)
  • Superb load-bearing properties
  • Durable building board
  • BBA approved
  • Standard finished thickness of 18mm
  • Cost-effective alternative to plywood

OSB T&G 18mm - Tongue & Groove Explained

OSB T&G 18mm boards comprise a ‘tongue’ edge with a precisely engineered gap ‘groove’.

When installing the boards, this tongue edge slots perfectly into the groove, making the installation process a breeze.

For additional security, the boards can also be glued or bound with screws or nails ( a method often referred to as ‘secret nailing’).

Using OSB T&G 18mm in Humid Conditions

Thanks to the resin binders and wax involved in its manufacturing process, OSB sheet material is tolerant to both moisture and humidity.

Strips and flakes of wood are layered with an adhesive resin and then hot-pressed into a panel. This strength lends itself to OSB3's performative superiority over its sister board OSB2.

While Class 2 OSB can only be used for non-load-bearing applications in dry conditions, 18mm OSB3 can be used for structural, load-bearing uses in humid conditions in housing applications. The boards are edge-coated with a proprietary water-resistant sealer to lessen the chances of edge swelling.

Despite this being the case, it is always a good idea to add further weather protection if you are planning to use it for permanent outdoor use.

You can do this by adding weather-proof exterior paint. Follow the exterior paint with a wood waterproofing sealant. Allow 12-14 hours for it to dry before installing it - you can add a second coat if required.
